Sensible first time keg advise sought

Hi, For many years I've been doing bottles-only brewing. Way back in early days I used a PB but haven't looked at them in years. Recently experimented with re-using supermarket mini kegs (Hobgoblin) with reasonable success but the usual caveats (very foamy at start, lose pressure as barrel goes...

What about this for the name of a pub?

Reminds me of a joke I heard long ago about the village with a pub called The Traveller's Arms; then one called The Travellers' Head; then The Traveller's Legs. And finally The Traveller's Rest.

    Dirty lazy barstewards

Flippin' brilliant. I didn't think you could get hold of the information from DVLA but apparently if you fill in a form V888 with 'reasonable cause' you can get the registered keeper details. Just hope he hadn't borrowed a mate's van...

.. and very nice it is too, as I recall. (Not been there for a good few years though).

Taking a sample/reading - throw out the sample?

The sample I take on day 1 for the OG reading, I put back into the FV (the sample cylinder and hydrometer have been sitting in sterilisation solution up to that point). As for the FG sample, I tend to chug it - a nice refreshing malty drink... but generally only take one sample shortly before...

    Infection

I had a batch that looked very similar to that (this thread). I left it in the FV to settle, racked and bottled and it came out slightly flat, distinctly 'funky' (i.e. cidery) but drinkable in an 'interesting' way. Some of the bottles developed a bit of a pellicle themselves; I poured the beer...

Swing top bottles, lacking carb after refrigeration

Hi Tweedie - I use the dishwasher on its highest temp setting and purely as a hot-water blaster, with no detergent tablet; so it's primarily for sterilisation. ( If I find an old bottle I'll give it a VWP soak, rinse and bottle-brush first; ) No discernible effect on the brew as far as I am...

Swing top bottles, lacking carb after refrigeration

I use Grolsch bottles and Fischer Alsace bottles collected over the years - many picked up on camping holidays in France when my kids were at school. I'm now a grandad. I routinely rinse the bottles straight after pouring and then put the bottles through the dishwasher (70 deg programme, no...

Oops - added priming sugar to bottling bucket then decided to cold crash

Hello, I am wondering if I have made a horlicks of my Youngs New World Saison. I added the dry hops several days ago when the SG was 1.006 after 10 days Today the SG was still 1.006 (which is the bottle-me FG according to the instructions) so I : - dissolved the suplied 135g priming sugar in...

Good online place for used books

Looks like it's available for free download here (sites.google.com) but it's deceptive, you have to jump through some hoops ("Complete at least one 'Offer' ") to get it (I didn't try)... Also on slideshare.net , wants you to 'register' but I think that may be all it requires.

10 Day Fermentation Ending, But I need to Travel?

Great post poddyc, really helpful. I've always found it a bit unclear when secondary fermentation is being talked about so this helps a lot.
