    Homebrew has defeated me :(

Can you remember what size yeast packet came with your kits? Many years ago there was a whole load of threads on here about the infamous "1020 stuck brews", it was often concluded that it was due to the small 6g yeast packets coming with kits. Some kit manufacturers increased the yeast to 12g...

    Brewing temperature

I still use the fish tank heater in a builder's trug, works well, been doing this for 10+ years.

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Finally bagged them all up - a holiday got in the way, hope they didn't dry too much. Despite all my earlier observations of Cascade being poor this year, they were all equal, 450g each of Styrian Goldings, Challenger and Cascade. Total 1.35kg, that should be enough for the brewing year.

    Infected or not?

I've bottled some brews 10 days in, others 30 days in...depends on the yeast, some have a really long ferment tail (especially some of the MJ ones).

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Just picked the last of the Cascade: 29 Sept. Was hoping for a warm spell to finish them off but it didn't come and they're starting to brown so had to get them in. Really poor crop of them this year, last year they were the best. Still drying and bagging them all up but Challenger look like...

    Dehydrator not big enough

There will always be too much for a food dehydrator. I usually dry mine in trays in the garage but it's got too cold too early, so they're in the house. If using solid trays just remember to keep turning them as the ones underneath will stay wet and go mouldy. Bag them up with a cheap vacuum...

    Wye Valley HPA

I thought they were the same thing? Just picked this up off a hop website "Celeia, also known as Styrian Golding, grows in Styria and Slovenia." Whenever I've ordered them they seem interchangeable. And I grown Styrians so have loads of them to hand.

    Wye Valley HPA

Because that's the hops that the website say are in the beer "Our brewers have let locally grown Target and Celeia hops hang out with Maris Otter pale malt " (I've also done a brewery tour and seen them) https://www.wyevalleybrewery.co.uk/our-beers/hpa/ Target is the bittering hop and Styrian...

    St peters cream stout stuck

Yes, always keep a stash of yeast in the fridge. Crossmyloof is a good supplier, very cheap & good yeast if you buy in bulk https://www.crossmyloofbrew.co.uk/ But experience tells em that if a kit comes with only 6g of yeast, I'll throw it (or use it in a smaller brew) and substitute it for a...

    St peters cream stout stuck

The problem is that the yeast has run out of steam. Did you happen to note the size of the yeast packet it came with? Needs 11/12g for a 23L brew, some kits skimp on the yeast and only provide a 6g packet, and then the brews get stuck at 1020. It's a very common problem and lots of threads on...

Low Efficiency - How to improve

This is the problem with AG brewing - everyone gets different efficiencies so trying to replicate a recipe from someone else is so much harder because of all the variables. I would say it's more important to have repeatable effiiciency rather than a high efficiency, as you can plug that into...

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

You don't have to put the vacuum packed ones in the freezer as they're sealed, just keep them away from sunlight in a coolish place - I put them in a carboard box in the garage. Our freezer is always rammed (kids & dogs). I do have a bit of the freezer for opened packets.

Munton's Traditional Ale LME kit stuck

Can you remember how much yeast was in the packet? Muntons kits were notorious for stalling at 1020, the so-called "stuck brew", because they only had 6g of yeast with the kits rather than then usual 11/12g required for 23L of beer. Some Muntons kits then has 11/12g packets but some kept with...

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Finally caved in, picked some of the Styrian Goldings today: bumper crop. Might get some more but TBH that's going to be enough for the next year. Challenger next, Cascade still seem to be developing so maybe a week or two away.

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Nice one, I think some of mine are ready but this weather isn't helping, 7.6mm of rain here in 15min at 5am this morning! Doesn't look too bad midweek so might go for that. The Cascade are nowhere near ready.

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Not really, but it works. Would get more hops if it was higher but that's all I can reach, it produces more than enough hops for a years brewing.

I've never had a successful brew with a MJ yeast

Interesting, Liberty Bell is my go-to yeast: not a fan of S-04 anymore, produces a very bland beer IMHO. LB is usually bubbling the airlock within 6-8 hours if I rehydrate it. I've had varied success with some of the other MJ yeasts, in particular the M15 Empire Ale yeast has always been a bit...

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

The Styrians are grown up this: basically the longest bits of B&Q timber I could get in the car, made into a frame with string dangled off it for the bines to grow up, Guess it's about 10ft tall. Been growing these for about 10 years. The Challenger is grown up a tall garden archway across...

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Very decent crop here this year, Challenger and Styrian Goldings are nearly ready to pick. I'll wait as late as possible as the aromas are still developing, they've really come on in the last few days. Cascade is well behind, I guess because of the cooler temps this year, some cones still...

Growing Chinook and Centennial - when to harvest, what should I look for?

Leave them, even the British hops aren't anywhere near ready yet and the "C" US ones will be even later. My Cascade are noticably behing my Challenger and Goldings, I'll probably be picking the latter in around 2 weeks time, the Cascade a week or two later. The idea is to pick them as late as...
