Thanks guys, I was leaning US-05 as it was, you've put my mind at rest. Disaster averted!

    Spring ale yeast

Hi, I am right now brewing the spring beer from GH book. Its my second version of it. The first was cascade/citra as I couldn't get wai-iti at the time. Now I'm going with the galaxy/wai-iti per recipe. I'm bringing the second galaxy addition to 15 mins though and then a big wai-iti dry hop. My...

    American pale/IPA recipe

Have you used cashmere hops before? what are they like/supposed to be like? the name puts me off, makes me think I'll get hairs stuck in my throat.....

    American pale/IPA recipe

What about a kind of Vienna Wheat beer? You could do like: 1.5kg each of Pilsner, Wheat and Vienna, then 1kg of Munich? Save a bit of the pilsner and forego the Vienna. I've never used Red X. What hops and yeast do you have?

    American pale/IPA recipe

Just reviving this thread as being cooped up indoors is making me very creative on the homebrew planning front.... I'm now thinking of picking up a packet of Sabro to add to the pile of unused hops in the freezer, don't tell her indoors. So I am thinking about something along these lines...

to sparge or not ! Appreciate a bit of advice fellas ....

I used to measure this, take a sample from the sparge when I was getting close to my target boil volume. But it's such a faff to then recalculate for the difference in temperature of the wort too. So I stopped. And it's always fine.

    Sorachi Red IPA

Thanks @matt76 , thats really helpful. I tend to add about 200g of carapils to a lot of brews by default. My last but one brew was a Rye IPA actually, this was my grain bill: Pale 3.25kg Rye 1kg Cararye 450g Caramunich III 300g Carapils 200g for a 15l batch (1.064 OG, 1.015 FG). Which...

    Mosaic Pale Ale

The last one I did was like this: Pale malt 3kg Vienna 800g Carapils 200g Mosaic 20g @60 Mosaic 20g @15 Mosaic 20g @whielpool Mosaic 40g dry hop Used mangrove jacks liberty Bell but next time would use US-05 I think. It came OK fine but didn't have that distinctive mosaic flavour. If I do...

    Sorachi Red IPA

Hi there, I have a pile of hops in the freezer including a packet of Sorachi Ace. I've never used them before and tbh I haven't really enjoyed beers I've had thst use SA. I don't want to do a Saison or lighter lager which a lot of forums and homebrewers recommend. I have a range of malts in...

To Whirlpool or not to Whirlpool....

thanks for all the answers and comments, interested to see how this brew comes out now!

To Whirlpool or not to Whirlpool....

This is pretty much exactly what I did. Chilled to 80c then took the chiller out, dumped the "whirlpool" hops in a stirred it for a 10 min steep. then bunged the chiller back in and took it down to 20 or so. I added dry hops last night so now need to wait and see!

To Whirlpool or not to Whirlpool....

I fear you are right about that. I started using hop bags a few brews ago as I got fed up of the trub clogging up the bottom of my boiler and taking forever then to drain out. But I think there is definitely a higher impact to hop flavour and aroma for my brews than generally reported.

To Whirlpool or not to Whirlpool....

Hi there, After about 3 years of brewing I have never done a "whirpool". I use "whirlpool" hops a lot but all this means is I shut off the heat, switch on the immersion chiller and then bung the hop bag in and leave it in there whilst the wort cools and until I have drained it into the FV. I...

    Crystal 60 vs Caramunich III

ah OK thanks a lot guys! I was being lazy and using the multiply by 2 method which clearly is not very accurate at all. I think I have always done this so not sure why after a few years of brewing its only suddenly occured to me! Doesnt seem like I am the first one (e.g...

    Crystal 60 vs Caramunich III

Hi there, This might be a stupid question so I am braced for that. All my malt substitute charts list Caramunich III as the closest Weyermann substitute for Crystal 60L. However if I check with my supplier (https://eshop.sladovna-kounice.cz/Karamelovy-slad-III-Caramunich-Malt-III-d25.htm) they...

    Rye IPA recipe

Brilliant, thanks a lot for the input, I will do just that then! Another option I thought of was to bitter with Sorachi Ace as I have a packet of that that I have no plans for, but it seems a waste.... With regard Caramunich III, I can only generally get Weyermann malts here so for crystal I...

    Rye IPA recipe

Wow, looks like a good one. Keep us updated how it turns out! I think I'm alright with my grain bill. Its not far off that one. I can't quite make it all out but the main difference is chocolate in place of my cararye. Its the hops I'm worried about, whether 100g of Nelson sauvin will hold its own.

    Rye IPA recipe

Hi there, For my "Getting away from the in-laws for a day between Christmas and New Years" brew this year I am planning to use the packet of Nelson Sauvin hops I have in the freezer. I've never used actual hops and not pellets before so thought it was a good occasion to try it. And I have...

Best Star SAN Alternative including all new Chemsan

I don't wanna open a can of worms here but for about 30 brews now I have used Chemipro Oxi for cleaning and sanitising. My stockists list it as a sanitiser but having read this thread and gone down an Internet rabbit hole I see posts saying it's one or the other. From my experience I've only...

    so who gets gout..

I had this - big toe, hands and shoulders (randomly) so I went on a low purine diet and cut out all bread and bakery, all smoked meats, most beans and pulses and some other funny stuff like chocolate, cauliflower, peas and mushrooms. Reduced red meat and alcohol (beer really should be on the cut...
