    Rauchbier idea

Yeah I've used the weyermann smoked in a couple of dark beers at around 25% and never have more than a slight hint. I feel like it's much milder these days. For a Schlenkerla clone I want to go the full hog! I could reduce to 3kg and replace the balance with pilsner. Would save me buying an...

    Rauchbier idea

Hi there, I am about to order the ingredients to brew a Rauchbier marzen, something in the style of Spezial or Schlenkerla from Bamberg. I've looked around a bit online and taken some ideas and then modified and ended up with this: Boil vol: 19l | batch vol: 15l target OG: 1.056 | target FG...

    Rauchbier/Smoked marzen idea

I actually didn't know this but it makes a lot of sense. I thought carafa II was more chocolate and carafa III black. But last time I got both there was very little difference. I'll get a I and III next time and compare them.

    Greg Hughes recipes

Since posting the above I have brewed the Irish Red ale, it came out fairly well - not exactly red though, quite dark. I have also brewed the Belgian Golden Strong (but subbed in Sladek/Saaz) and it came out very very well indeed. I am bottling the Belgian Tripel that I brewed over Christmas...

    Rauchbier/Smoked marzen idea

Hi there, My stock of Bamberg beers is running low so I started to plan a home-brewed Smoked Marzen. I am loosely looking at something around the Spezial/Schlenkerla marzen style. So far I have this: 87.5% Weyermann Smoked 5% Melanoidin 5% carapils 2.5% Carafa II ---- Sladek @60 for 28 ibu...

Errata: Greg Hughes, Home Brew Beer (2019 edition)

Me too, it kept coming into my head when I was doing something else like running in a forest! And then I'd forget once I got home! 😂

Errata: Greg Hughes, Home Brew Beer (2019 edition)

This is an error from the previous (2013) edition so I don't know if it was repeated, if not then let me know and I will delete. The Kolsch recipe (pg 197) states it is "top-fermented like an ale but conditioned at low temperatures like a lager". However the temperatures listed are 18 degrees...

    Apollo, Cascade, Wai-iti

I am planning a "leftovers" brew soon and have open packets of these three hops to use up. I wondered if anyone has combined Wai-iti with either Cascade or Apollo before and whether it would play nice?

    Brewing app

Thanks @Turexy , I did download it and $20 doesn't seem outrageous. So far I have seen a couple of errors around connectivity but otherwise it looks good so far. I don't see a plato to SG converter but I might be pushing my luck there! and thanks @Gerryjo I will look into it. I think Brewers...

    Brewing app

Thanks for the replies. I would love to use Brewers Friend at least to try it out, I often visit their site to use some of the individual calculators. But I can't find an Android app anywhere? It is not in the Play store and the website tries to redirect to the store and hangs. I saw on some...

    Brewing app

Hi there, Not sure which forum this should be in so starting here. My phone is about to give up the ghost and I have been using BrewShop which inexplicably doesn't seem to sync to any cloud storage. Therefore I am about to lose an inventory of about 35 brews. I am looking for a way to extract...

    Your favourite stout recipe?

The Palmer stout came out quite well when I brewed it. 82% Pale malt, 6% flaked Barley, 6% roasted barley, 3% crystal 120, 3% black patent. Nugget @60 for 30ibu and my hood @30 for 12ibu (I used Mt hood but the recipe calls for fuggles).

    Pilsner or lager recipe..

My standard pilsner is 88% pilsner malt, 8% Carapils and 4% melanoidin. I do four hop additions with Sládek at 60 and 30 and Saaz at 10 and switch-off. Boil 19L and batch 15L for an OG of 1.048 (approx 4.5-5% abv) and ibu of 38. My aim is a classic Czech Ležák (12° plato). I add the Melanoidin...

    First NEIPA attempt

By the way love the look of your recipe, adding rye seems pretty unique!

    First NEIPA attempt

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I have brewed already, did it on Thursday. Was a pretty successful one by all accounts and the airlock was bubbling away today. I did take a peak inside last night (I know, I know, couldn't help me self) and it was probably the most beautiful krausen I've ever had...

    First NEIPA attempt

Going back to the hop schedule. I bit the bullet in the end and ordered a packet of Galaxy to add to the mix as per the recipe I am basing this on. I don't have enough Citra though to follow the recipe exactly. Wonder if anyone has any advice on the below? This is the hop schedule per the...

    First NEIPA attempt

Yep, point taken. I have managed to get hold of a water profile for our tap water but I'll need to translate it from Czech to English I guess. My motivation has come from trying to expand my knowledge in my last few brews, using adjuncts and making water adjustments, but sounds like there is...

    First NEIPA attempt

My recipe says to add gypsum but when I google it I get some sort of building plaster? is that what I am supposed to put in? I am not sure about that!

    First NEIPA attempt

Could you use their verdant yeast for this style? I saw it at the (online) shop and was tempted to chuck one in the basket for later as it sounds interesting and I've never used any of their yeasts. Thanks both, this is great!

    First NEIPA attempt

Wow, thanks for the advice, thats a really good start. I'm glad to hear that about the RO water. I will definitely remove the 5 min and add more dry hops then. I just noticed the plan I found had a flame out and a whirlpool and I read it as just one addition so I'm clearly short so will shift...
