    UKIP has a new leader

Surprised the mods haven't taken this down. I come here to have a nice mature discussion over IBUs and the best way to sparge not to go UKIP-baiting. What I will say though is I found it funny to see Labour being accused as being unelectable despite having a fully costed manifesto by someone...

SMaSH Citra Pale Ale Recipe Advice

Yeah, no worries I thought that was the case. I do that myself all the time on my recipes. List at the top what I actually have and then start from there, wait till you have half a dozen half full bags of hops and the list is like 40g of this, 60 of that, 25g of mt hood etc. :-)

    Carlsberg Stout...

Off topic I know but I have had Carlsberg Stout, thought proabbly not that recipe. Carlsberg used to brew domestically in Malawi although I think they have sold to a French company now. Bit silly drinking Carlsberg when all the surrounding countries have great local beers but thats the way it...

SMaSH Citra Pale Ale Recipe Advice

Yeah your best bet is to pump some numbers into one of the tools (I use the "beer Shop" app) and play around until they seem about right. Do you mean you will end up with a 1 gal (3.8l) batch after boil? If so I worked out based on a roughly 5l boil volume that 1kg of maris otter would be...

    Mosaic ale

I have Sladek or Saaz hops. I could buy some more but I seem to be constantly doing "spring cleaning" brews. The Mosaic is a fresh batch, maybe I should have bought two packets! I guess I could bitter with the Sladek?

    Mosaic ale

Hi there, My other brew at the planning stage (in addition to the black IPA I just asked about) is a Mosaic pale ale. I have never used Vienna malt and heard that it combines well with Mosaic so thought this was a time to try it. Recipe so far is: predicted wort 20l predicted og 1.052...

Black IPA / Cascadian Dark Ale recipe - any tips?

Hi there, I have amassed a decent selection of odd amounts of various malt and hops and want to use some up in a Cascadian Ale. Currently my recipe looks something like this: Predicted wort: 20l predicted OG: 1.056 predicted abv: 6% 3.6kg pale ale malt 400g Cara-aroma (like crystal 120) 250g...

Klarstein Beerfest Mash Kettle homebrew Kit 2585W30L

In case anyone is interested I ended up buying one of these: https://www.hifi-tower.co.uk/Klarstein-Fuellhorn-Mash-Kettle-2500W-30L-LED-Display-Timer-304-Stainless-Steel_i37611.htm Cost me about £150 over here in Prague including the mashing bag thingy. However, I'll be using it only to boil...

Get Er Brewed - stupid delivery prices

Wow, I mean I know its not GEB fault for the couriers terms but to be state that Inverness is not the mainland and then be aggressive and confrontational. I guess they don't realise how many customers this attitude could lose them. I'd be sending an email complaint in if it were me.

    Question on hitting boil volume

Ah OK, I'll give it a try then. To be honest I first read about the over-sparging thing in the Greg Hughes book before brewing my first batch, he also notes not to let the runnings go below 1.010. Hence, I simply assumed it was standard practice.

    Question on hitting boil volume

I have always been under the impression I should stop sparging once the hydrometer reads approximately 1.010 (adjusted for temp) in order to prevent astringency from tannins from being extracted from the grain into the wort...

    Question on hitting boil volume

Thanks Iain. I always measure the sparge water but generally stop when the hydrometer hits 1.010 even though I have 5l left in the tank so to speak. Should I be adding that water to the wort then?

    Question on hitting boil volume

Hi there, This post might win some awards for dumbness but here goes... I have been brewing a while now and overall I am pretty satisfied with my progress. I didn't brew anything I had to pour down the loo yet anyway. However seems like every brew I do I end up approx 5 litres short of...

What's the most you've paid for a beer?

Anyone who buys this brobably wins this post... http://delawarebusinessnow.com/2018/01/dogfish-head-announces-end-wort-survival-beer/ But should also be reprimanded for buying a bottle full of b*ll*cks and b*llsh*t :-)

What's the most you've paid for a beer?

I reckon it might have been 007 bar? Its in the student residents area up near Strahov stadium. They have a lot of punk bands there and stuff. I live about 20 miles east out of the centre of Prague and a pint in any of the pubs in the villages around me is less than £1 (or 50p...

    What did you brew today?

Brewed a version of the Palmer Stout on New Years Eve. Had various issues (detailed elsewhere in the forum) but got 17l in the FV at 1.048 ish. Swapped out fuggles for mt hood from the recipe and added some black patent.

    Klarstein mash kettle- worth getting?

Ah, thanks. Problem is I brew in the cellar so no access to a hob really. I don't mind continuing to brew in my cooler, it works fine, lose only a degree or two during the mash. I just thought if I was upgrading I could maximise.

    Your brew plans for 2018

Brewed the stout, however my home-made bucket boiler took a turn for the worst at the weekend. The hot sockets had evidently melted a little during my previous brew unnoticed and one would no longer work and I obviously had reservations about running the whole brew on the other one alone as it...
