    New shiny (FV)

So, my wife bought me a new shiny for my upcoming birthday, arrived today via DPD from Geterbrewed (ordered yesterday......), a Brew Monk stainless steel Conical FV... athumb..

Counterflow chillers - are they worth it?

If you are finding your plate chiller isn't cooling significantly faster than an immersion chiller, well you either had an amazing immersion chiller (mine was naff), your wort flow rate through it is too high, or your plate chiller is to small for the volumes you're cooling (or all of the...

    Immersion, Plate or Counter Flow?

I switched from a copper immersion chiller to a decent sized plate chiller when I returned to brewing last year. Immersion chillers are easier to keep clean for sure (wort doesn't run through them at any point, so no risk of clogs), where a plate chiller you have to make very sure that wort is...

Request - A recipe for a Tring Side Pocket For a Toad/ish brew

It is a great beer, very easy to drink. Not actually had any for years now, it's not exactly a local brew and well we're not exactly going to pubs that might have it in as a guest right now (and to be really honest, haven't been going to decent pubs for a few years now, we tend to just go a...

    Buying on Ali Express

Just to note, buying on AliExpress isn't as cheap any more, and kind of pointless, the savings are much much smaller. Basically with the new rules the UK is under, they have had to register to pay VAT in the UK, and this is applied when you come to check out. I tried it, and on an item costing...

    Sanitiser in the FV!!!

Umph, can't say I'd use a liquid yeast (other than Kveik) without at least a vitatality starter. You may well have pitched dead yeast, unknowingly. No biggy, so long as you have a packet of dried yeast ready to go when nothing happens. Trust me, no krausen etc by now, that yeast was dead.

Do you use pressure barrels or bottles for your home-brewed BEER?

Not actually true. I answered that I mostly or always bottle my beer, because I do. However I tried cheaper pressure barrels when I entered the hobby, and gave up on them as the seams were prone to leaking on them, so I moved to bottling..... That and I like most of my beers to have a bit more...

    Kit plus mash

I can understand why people might be a little puzzled though, as if you are going to do a mash and boil anyway, then surely you may as well just go AG and save even more money? Worried about not having big enough pans etc? Stop worrying about brewing 23 litres and brew half that at a time...

Sparging on Klarstein (Ace, Hopcat, Brewdevil, etc)

To spread out the liquid from the return pipe over a wider area, reducing the impact from it by spreading it out over a larger surface area, so it's drips or trickles, vs a squirt. Same as every other sparging device on the market. In fact, I tried using my Klarstein without it in, all that...

    Pumps for Home Brew

I get where you are coming from, totally, a concern if you are pumping hot or warm fluids. Cool fluids though a lot of heat should be getting carried away from the pump by the liquid itself. In brewing, I doubt you will find anybody using a bypass system, certainly not on the home scale...

    Pumps for Home Brew

You can use a ball valve on the output of magnetic drive pumps just fine without any problems, same way as aquarists have been doing for many many years... ;) Just don't put it on the intake.

Sparging on Klarstein (Ace, Hopcat, Brewdevil, etc)

It'll fall straight through the bottom of the grain basket if you mill it too fine, then get sucked into the pipework... Just to give you a heads up. The holes in the Brauheld Pro are massive! If you are going to go that way, you may want to remove the overflow and fit a Lidl frying pan...

    Where to buy bottles from

Mine were delivered today too. Well packaged, and nice bottles. I honestly don't mind the longer lead time, especially as I was struggling to find 330mls steinies at a reasonable price. These came in at a decent price as shipping and caps were included. There is actually an option on there...

    Punk ipa Wetherspoons 5,2%

No worries. Definitely wasn't 75 IBUs though! I used whole hops, so my boiler was packed with hops on the bottom at the end, but they're mostly late additions, so don't add much to the IBUs. Just lots of lovely flavour. It tasted just like Hobgoblin Gold that was around when I brewed it...

    Punk ipa Wetherspoons 5,2%

As you say you use Beersmith, here's the file for the recipe scaled to 14 litres (the volume I brew now). Easy to scale back up if you need to.

    Punk ipa Wetherspoons 5,2%

Did you adjust for the AA of the hops, as this changes per harvest? I have it at 38.4 IBUs in Beersmith 3 with the hops at the AA % for the years of harvest at the time. Also, I used to brew full sized, 25 litre batches into the FV back then, you didn't put it in as 14 litres like I brew now...

    Where to buy bottles from

Aye, I ordered in plenty of time for them to arrive before I needed to bottle. In fact, the beer should just about be ready more or less when they get here. athumb.. I have a bench capper, and a wife who does the capping whilst I do the filling, so can't be bothered with swing tops. When...

    Where to buy bottles from

They're VERY slow, I finally got an email from them and DPD today, to tell me that the bottles I ordered on 21/09 are finally arriving on 5/10..... They're not prompt in the slightest. lol

Essences to flavour your day beer!!!

My experience with testing was that essences always taste artificial, many extracts however can be delicious and make quite a nice beer. I tried plum essence in various stouts, was rank....
