    Too busy to brew...

My teenaged daughters, and probably my dogs, would not thank me.... lol We actually have an ultra sonic anti-bark device with a setting for that, we don't use it for either as as an anti bark it's useless, it just confuses the dogs, and yeah my daughters would be a bit annoyed with me if I set...

Stir plates. How effective are they?

Teflon is just a trademarked brand name of PTFE, just by the by, so same difference. ;) Never boiled my stir bar, and to be honest since I started using liquid kveik rather than normal yeasts haven't actually used my stir plate. When I did though, it was effective, and didn't add any of the...

    Too busy to brew...

Well, we put my new gazebo up yesterday, and we just assembled the baker's rack that I brew on under it. Just need some new host to run water from the garden tap when filling my boiler etc and I'll be ready to brew again. athumb.. Touch wood, between the police and council clamp down, and...

    Too busy to brew...

What can I say, just been too busy to brew lately... Between local brats deciding that our living room window is good for target practice, leading to 4 days of constant call outs to the police, and our finally installing CCTV:- Hiring a skip to do a MASSIVE spring clean of the house and...

Covid the *** and the final stage.

My wife and myself had our 2nd jabs the week before last I'm glad to say. Wife had very sore arm, prolonged lethargy and headache. I had a sore arm that was fine 24 hours later, 12 hours of lethargy, but it triggered my cluster migraine... My headache still cleared up before my wife's did...

    Kveik

For Stranda I always use Omega Hothead Ale. Never ever had any trouble with it, never done a starter either. The first use I pitch the whole packet and do something less reliant on yeast flavours. I then top crop it from high krausen, and subsequent brews I underpitched from this harvested...

Spent grain, compost bin and mice

We just fixed our rat problem in our composters:- 1 Moved them to the middle of the garden, well away from the edges, completely out in the open and in the clear. 2 Increased the moisture levels, stuff is breaking down faster, and it's not such a lovely place to make a warm and dry home now. 3...

I am looking for a "Safetycork" for wine bottles that used to exist

Click on your link, then click on the image so it loads. Then right click, copy image address (or just copy the url from the address bar). Now use the image icon on here, switch to the url option, and paste the url you just copied into the box, like so:- Hope this helps. athumb..

Robobrew/all in one overflow - why not?

Because it's pointless having it so high that it overflows. The point is to circulate the liquor through the grain, any that is overflowing isn't doing this, so you may as well turn it down a bit and nullify any risk of grain particles getting recirculated.

When to add the wort chiller?

The main reason I can think of is that you will be reducing the volume of your boiler by doing so, meaning less room for wort at the start. When you put one in near the end a fair bit has boiled off already, freeing up volume for your immersion chiller to fill. If it bothers you that much...

    Electric BIAB upgrade

My previous setup was a DIY eBIAB setup. To be honest, the biggest PITA was building the controller, it ended up rather large and cumbersome, and was a nuisance to use because of this. With a PSU for my pump, power cable, power out cable and the temp probe cable, there were just so many...

    Unforced Errors

The one time I did it, they swelled up and overflowed it.... Thinking you possibly have something different.

Have you ever tried putting whole hops into a stainless steel hop spider? Don't.... lol

    Klarstein v's Burco setup

You forgot the cost of a false bottom to keep the bag off the bottom of the Burco there... Yeah, get the Klarstein, unless you are going much bigger, then get a bigger Klarstein..... lol

Can anyone recommend a Carbon water filter?

We have one of those big Brita filters as our water is nasty.... I don't use it for brewing though, just for the bean to cup machine and making bread etc (I don't actually like the taste of water, with the exception of 1 brand of Turkish sparkling water that can literally be used to get rid of...

    Klarstein Maischfest and Mashing

Yeah, I was getting around 80% brewhouse efficiency with my DIY eBIAB rig, since switch to my single vessel Klarstein I'm down to 60% and even dipped under this.... Switching to fly sparging from my next brew day on to try to bring it back up again as bought an 18 litre tea urn to heat my...

    Klarstein Maischfest and Mashing

Three things that will help with your flow issues (apart from an SS tap after the pump obviously. lol). Use some rice hull or oat husks in your grist (if I remember correctly, the usual is around the 4% mark), seriously it helps a LOT to get the liqour flowing through the malt column more...

Any Fastferment conical FV users out there?

Fingers crossed. I got my stainless from Geterbrewed, my wife bought it for me for my last birthday. £173.50 might seem a lot for something to ferment your beer in, but compared to the PET ones, seems like an investment to me.

Any Fastferment conical FV users out there?

Yeah I eyed them up when they first came out, but it wasn't long before the bad reviews had started to roll in, and luckily I didn't have the cash at the time. lol There IS a plastic FV of an ilk that is probably quite good, made by Spiedel, called the Kellermeister. However given that the 30...

    Klarstein Maischfest and Mashing

Yeah, was easier for me with my pump as the fittings on it are 1/2" BSP not barbed, so I could just screw fittings (like taps) directly to it. With a pump with barbs, you've got to put the tap either inline, or fit it to lid of your boiler at which point I recommend also using either a quick...
