Ways of eliminating oxygen contact when dry hopping

Sorry the above is more a reply to @nickjdavis ! I should have quoted to save confusion

Ways of eliminating oxygen contact when dry hopping

I know, and I agree really. But that is the great thing about brewing, you don't know if it's better or not until you try. I haven't ever had any I'll effects from dry hopping, although I can't know that to the full extent until I've tried all other things I can think of. If that makes sense!

Ways of eliminating oxygen contact when dry hopping

I know, sorry. It's all been discussed before! I remember seeing recently a fabulous contraption with some magnets designed to drop the hops into the fermenter. Awesome! I dry hopped today, (my golden ale swap beer) and thought 'if I just put a bit of sucrose in there, it would create enough...

How much whisky to add to beer?

Perhaps try getting a beer in a glass, and adding a small measured amount of whisky to it. Increase it, until you have the taste you want. I'm aware once it's added during the process it'll taste a bit different, but it gives you a really strong starting point. I've done this with hops and a...

Summer Brew and Swap - British Golden Ale

What's the date for the swap? I just happen to have a golden East Kent Golding's thing fermenting away... It's a made up recipe I put together with leftovers but I'm really looking forward to it! Count me in!

May Brew Review Thread - Saison

@Alastair70 , a good beer that I forgot to take a photo of, so my apologies for that. Packaged in a plastic bottle, I had to get some pump grips to get the top off! It was definitely Royal Mail proof. Once I was in I found a good beer, slightly cloudy, slightly spicy and some slight orange...

May Brew Review Thread - Saison

@Agentgonzo, a good beer! Opens with a healthy pfft, pours nicely, I was able to leave the yeast largely in the bottle. No Coke taste! I'm afraid I have an uneducated nose, but was able to detect what I thought was the use of Belle Saison, a yeast I've used hence my familiarity. Not too...

May Brew Review Thread - Saison

Agentgonzo; thank you for those kind words. I'm really pleased you liked it, and was genuinely dreading it being so awful you had to pour it away! It's a little more bitter than a Saison should perhaps be, but I like it that way. I'll post the recipe if anyone would like to see it. I...

May Brew and Swap - Saison

Alastair70 and Agentgonzo I sent your beers out today. Hope they survive the postage system, they're pretty well packaged so I hope you get them ok. I've sent them 1st class which may have been a bit eager of me but at least you'll have em soon!

    Secondary fermentation

Ok, I see! but why wouldn't you just put an airlock on it from the beginning and not bother transferring? What the difference? What are you preventing/saving? Sierra Nevada is a great beer; the very epitome of Cascade!

    Secondary fermentation

Thank you. Succinct answer! Although I still don't fully understand the idea of moving beer from an open to a closed fv... Isn't it closed anyway with the airlock? My understanding is that the O2 and air is pushed out of the airlock by the co2 produced by the ferm. So if esters form (some...

    Secondary fermentation

So in the case of 1, you're avoiding esters, 2, this is the question entirely; why? Why not do that in the original fv and avoid the O2 exposure? 3, I completely understand! TIA

    Secondary fermentation

Yes, that's exactly what I do, but I bottle from the FV. I guess the bottling bucket is in place to avoid sediment in the bottles?
  18. FirebladeAdam

    Secondary fermentation

So bottling buckets seem a popular trick... I guess this is to keep beer clear? It doesn't disturb the sediment? But that also is oxygen exposure isn't it? But for a shorter time before bottling, is that right?

    Secondary fermentation

I totally agree with the above! I saw a Malt Miller video not long ago explaining how to use a starter kit and he had 'transferring to secondary' in the process, I thought to myself 'should I be doing this?'!

    Secondary fermentation

Hi all. I have begun to wonder about decanting into another fermenter for secondary. Who does it? What was the moment you realised it was better? I don't do it, I just let the ferm go for two weeks in one fermenter. Is it worth the exposure to oxygen? Using my kit it would undoubtedly be...
