Crushed apple and cinnamon wine (experiment fermenting juice with preservatives)

Update 6 days in. Started on the 1/3/22. The gravity is now 1.040 and it's still fermenting fairly vigorously. I'm really not sure how this one will turn out because of the preservatives in the cordial but so far it smells brilliant and it's fermenting without issue. I think the 2 X 500ml...

    Wine receipts from 1737

See, even at £3 a bag that's close to £12 for enough cherries for a DJ of wine. To upscale to 5g that would cost £48 for a 30 bottle batch. Seriously expensive. Considering you can get wine expert kits in that range and other mostly grape concentrate kits. WOWs are definitely great. Like...

    Wine receipts from 1737

These old books are really am amazing read! But are they practical? Probably not. I've bought several wine making books in the last couple weeks. The issue I've found with them is that most use actual fruit in the recipes. So should you want to make a cherry wine you'll need to source 1.8kg...

Crushed apple and cinnamon wine (experiment fermenting juice with preservatives)

I've heard many of times "don't ferment juices which contain preservatives as they prevent the yeast from building up a colony necessary for fermentation. But me being me, and seeing as apple and cinnamon wine sounded amazing, I just had to try for myself! I got a good deal on the Robinson's...

    My tea wine recipes

Yeah these are my first tea wines too. Though from the colour and aroma I'm pretty positive these will turn out good. I'm fermenting in 5L co op water bottles. I like them because I can discard them after a couple of uses. I filled these to 4.5 litres from the start because EC 1118 doesn't...

2 Magnum Red WIne Kits with modifications

About an hour after the last update they both foamed over the fermenting barrels. I've now removed the lids and airlocks and I'll be fermenting these out with just a loose fitting lid. The airlocks definitely increase the risk of foaming with the additional pressure which builds up.

    My tea wine recipes

Figured I would try my hand at the whole tea wine thing. I decided to make 2 separate demijohns each with a different tea. I decided on Good Earth hibiscus, rose and sweet berries. And Taste The Difference Strawberry and elderflower infusion. The ingredients for each tea are below. GE...

2 Magnum Red WIne Kits with modifications

Day 2 update Fermentation has started off vigorously! It's only been 14 hours since I pitched the yeast and they're already foaming like crazy! Blueberry Cherry

2 Magnum Red WIne Kits with modifications

A brew shop online had a sale on the Magnum wine kits. I picked up 3 of the red wine and one of the rose for £15 each. These are poor wine kits. Thin, not much body and are generally considered a do not buy. They do however contain around a litre of grape concentrate. Combined with everything...

    Cheap long term wine storage?

Hey, I'm in Liverpool mate. If you are anywhere near close I'd be super appreciative and more than happy to offer you something for them!

    Cheap long term wine storage?

Unfortunately the price quoted is without vat. And postage isn't that cheap. Works out at over £1 a bottle.

    Cheap long term wine storage?

Well I called 4 restaurants and asked. All of them refused. 2 of them said straight up no. 1 one of them put the phone down. The last one politely refused stating that they have contracts with recycling companies.

    Cheap long term wine storage?

Unfortunately I have looked on free cycle and it returned 0 results for demijohn. I've tried eBay and the only ones in my local area are going for about £6 each. Not even close to being a cheap storage method unfortunately! It would be ideal if I could actually find them cheap around...

    Cheap long term wine storage?

Now that's a hell of a deal thank you!! Works out at £0.65 per bottle. Far better than £1 a bottle and the postage is very reasonable!

    Cheap long term wine storage?

Errm, maybe because I'm not a dumpster diver? In all seriousness I would feel a little weird walking around a housing estate emptying people's recycling boxes into the boot of my car. Not really something I would be willing to do. Especially with all the identity theft cases in recent years...

    Cheap long term wine storage?

I don't have a local unfortunately. I don't visit pubs whatsoever. And id feel a little strange walking into a random pub to ask them to save the wine bottles for me. I would be interested to see people's experience of storing wine in plastic bottles for longer than a year. And I would be...

    Cheap long term wine storage?

After doing some research yesterday I found out that plastic PET bottles are not good for long term wine storage. Apparently after 8 months the wine begins to oxidize and degrades slowly. This was a huge surprise to me as my last batch of cellar 7 Malbec was amazing after 14 months in plastic...

How sterile are you with your home-brewing?

No most of what you said was perfectly relevant to wine production. People who produce wine "not from kits" very often boil at least a portion of the fermentation. For example, to prepare raisins or sultanas for a wine you definitely want to boil them. If you want to make wine from actual...

How sterile are you with your home-brewing?

People talk about being ridiculously sterile with the brewing process and I was just curious to see how sterile you guys take things when brewing? Personally, I sterilise my fermenter and bottles. That's basically it. I've never bothered to sterilise my spoon, airlocks, hydrometer, trial...
