    ****Fermentasaurus Mega Giveaway****

Fermentasaurus Snub Nose Starter Kit I'm keen to elevate my home brewing to make it the best I can and fermenting under pressure opens up some new possibilities in terms of fermentation times and hopping NEIPA style beers which will work much better under a pressurised transfer. I think the Snub...

    Planning a Raspberry Wheat

I’ve not had any issues with tartness but your probably better to brew it to your recipe and take good notes for adjustments you feel it may need next time. Good luck!

    Planning a Raspberry Wheat

Mine normally comes in about 5% and I don’t notice a big jump by adding the fruit - I’m not sure how easily fermentable fructose would be. An option if it’s working out a 6% is a increase the liquid volume and that might also deal with any losses from the fruit. I’ve tried this beer with 3kg...

    Planning a Raspberry Wheat

I enjoy a raspberry wheat but I pasteurise my fruit by heating and holding at about 80c for about 10 min then let it cool to the temp of my fv. I don’t add any bags etc but just make a bigger batch to compensate for the losses. I add mine about three days into fermentation and it comes out like...

Just nabbed a 1/4 cask! Imperial Stout meets wood experiment!

Great suggestion on serving from the cask but its a shared brew so the cask will be emptied and we'll split the volume - we did 30l each so we’ll aim to share the batch. I think by bottling it’ll give more longevity and any changes could be tracked over time etc.

Just nabbed a 1/4 cask! Imperial Stout meets wood experiment!

Yeah that's smoked malt and a suggestion from my fellow brewer - makes a lot of sense considering the cask! I have the recipe in much prettier format but this was my rough copy when marking off the grains for the malt order - didn't wanna mess up as the recipe was to be pretty much identical...

Just nabbed a 1/4 cask! Imperial Stout meets wood experiment!

We found that the cask was more than 60l so keep that in mind as it could be 70-80l to really fill it to the top. I was gonna go with a Mikkeller recipe initially but opted for this... I really should have bunged some sugar into the boil to up the abv but it hit about 9% average. I did a...

Just nabbed a 1/4 cask! Imperial Stout meets wood experiment!

Love the avatar pic :) and cheers for the link! Yeah it was from Campervan and the recipe used was brewered by me and another local home brewer with basically the same ingredients. We hit close to our numbers I think my two batches averaged about 8.5%-9% so just a little under the planned...

Just nabbed a 1/4 cask! Imperial Stout meets wood experiment!

Great advice. I’ll get this list to my mate and see what’s what. Hopefully there is a tap to sample from but if not we’ll have to consider that it remains sealed for the 6 months.

Just nabbed a 1/4 cask! Imperial Stout meets wood experiment!

Yeah we’re gonna test for leaks and there’s chat of a steam cleaner to be used but not sure if that’s gonna strip flavour. Due to the lockdown we're not getting a chance to arrange a day to do these things together so my fellow brewer will maybe be tasked with this duty. He has the space to...

Just nabbed a 1/4 cask! Imperial Stout meets wood experiment!

The barrel is approx 60L and you make a fair point but my counterpart and I are just keen to get some beer in there and we’re both aware of the risk. If it does work out then we’ll (hopefully) have an interesting beer and the smaller barrel should mean that it won’t need as long to impart what...

Just nabbed a 1/4 cask! Imperial Stout meets wood experiment!

The casks (maybe I should say barrels but they’re really 1/4 cask size) were used for sherry, once, then used by a distillery to age whisky in. These ones were emptied of their whisky very recently and we’re hoping we might get some of the whisky flavour from it. Isn’t that why folk age beer in...

Just nabbed a 1/4 cask! Imperial Stout meets wood experiment!

A local brewery has been offloading some 1/4 casks which initially were used for sherry then whiskey, Caol Ila. A fellow brewer and I are gonna brew a (same recipe) Imperial Stout (approx 11%) and fill the cask. We hope to age it for a minimum 6 months and see what happens! I'm kinda excited to...

Used this recently and it did a cracking job. Just ordered few packets for emergency purposes. I’m ok with it!

    WLP833 low attenuation

Most likely brewing again on Monday but I hope to give this Helles a good solid 5 weeks lagering. I’m also gonna try the Imperial malt in a stout so that might be interesting. Instead of 1.875kg pale malt I’m using 1kg Imperial and 875g pale malt. If you fancy I’ll send some of that your way...

    WLP833 low attenuation

I’ve just put a grain order in today for a Helles recipe and replaced the Munich malt with Simpsons Imperial malt at 4.5% of the grain bill. Thought it might add a little something to an otherwise traditional malt bill. Sompson blurb below...

black IPA malt recipe ideas please?

A brew tuber recently made a BIPA using this White labs recipe with some 'C' hops: Black IPA Yeast: WLP013 London Ale Yeast or WLP862 Cry Havoc Original Gravity: 1.066 Final Gravity: 1.010 Estimated ABV: 6.3 IBUs: 55.4 Grain (single infusion mash at 150°F): 79.8% 2-row barley (10lbs...

Mangrove Jack M44 is a strange one!

I used M44 recently for the first time and I’m gonna keep some handy as it was cracking. Didn’t notice the lag but it ripped through the brew. I remade the recipe with Imperial Joystick but had some issues (which were all my own doing to be fair) and think in the future I’m gonna stick with M44...
