Too cold to brew an ale ?

Is the heater in the FV ?

Too cold to brew an ale ?

Sorry I meant running the wort chiller in the FV in reverse so transferring heat from a separate tub of water with an aquarium heater and pump. It sounds a bit off a faff once I’ve written it down.

Too cold to brew an ale ?

Interesting I quite like this option before I embark on a brew fridge project others have suggested. Its a shame copper is reactive (both acid and alkali). Otherwise I think I would add an aquarium pump and use the wort chiller as a heat exchanger.

Too cold to brew an ale ?

I’ve rigged up a heating thermostat overnight in our north facing garage to log ambient temperature. The coding on the date stamp is a little iffy but broadly this is the ambient temperature profile 10.30pm ish to this morning. There was a frost overnight. Is this likely too cold to brew an ale...

    Diacetyl (Butterscotch)

Thanks and thanks to other posters. I’d be way way below that lower temperature in a North facing garage in January. Presumably although I got gravity readings and the beer cleared I hadn’t twigged the diacetyl rest needed to be longer! Does everyone just raise their temps at the end whatever...

    Diacetyl (Butterscotch)

Ok brewed an all grain using the Wilko English ale yeast. It cleared as expected and hit the expected gravity reading. FV the garage for 2 weeks in the primary ( pretty cold). 2weeks carbonation. It’s drinkable and I initially thought it was fruity but I’m leaning towards butterscotch. I can...

Have a go at simple AG

The first thing I did was I went out and got another pasta pot from Sainsbury’s (£18). These are just over 6L to the brim and worked well for me so will aim for 10L batches. On recipes I have the Greg Hughes book.

Have a go at simple AG

Of the 4.5L I managed to bottle only 7 500ml bottles. However, I tasted the hydrometer sample and dregs and wow it’s totally different beast to my extract brew! It was meant to be a 3 hop IPA but tasting there’s a fruityness complex layers of flavours that seems to change in the mouth. I’m not...

Have a go at simple AG

I had a go at an all grain IPA kit I received for Christmas. I used a pasta pot from Sainsbury’s (6L) with a hop bag from Wilko. The kit included 1.4kg of mixed malts. I think I made an error as after sparging with 1L I measured the pre boil gravity as 1.03 at 5.5L. I tasted the wort and it was...

    16L filter coffee machine- suitable?

Do you Sparge ? I’ve changed my mind and think a 27L mulled wine warmer with timer (temp can be set from 30-100C) is a better option with the temp control so can be used as a boiler.

    16L filter coffee machine- suitable?

Ta. Sorry a tad slow yesterday. Aww so when I thought all-grain I thought the 3 vessel setup (with pulleys and all sorts) but clearly an interesting branch in BIAB.I’ll take a look.

    16L filter coffee machine- suitable?

Yeah I estimate the basket has a capacity of about 4L to top.

    16L filter coffee machine- suitable?

Hi, Completed a kit and it worked Better than expected. Looking to go all-grain but have no equipment. Seen videos with people using an army of pots and tubes. I’ve found a 16L coffee filter machine from Royal Catering ( RCKM-20). A few things are not right like the temperature set (would...

    First brew

Cheers I will get a filter. Just to add tasted the hopped batch early. Although it still needs a bit of time to clear it’s clearing faster than expected. Fully carbonated (flip tops popped). I used 1/2 teaspoon for 500ml. Taste wise nice hop aroma and a strong grapefruit taste, very malty. Not...

    First brew

Thanks. I dry hopped for a few days. I decided to just throw them hops in loose and I would bottle after 4days. To filter I added a square of sanitised net curtain into the siphon end bit . This seemed to leave the hops behind (although I did accidentally disturb the trub when I tried at first...

    Good sanitizer product?

I need to get some starsan. Any high street sources ? Wilko ? I’m currently using Milton baby sanitiser tablets.

    Bottles

Label removing morning. The labels come off very easily on those Aldi Das Helle’s. The beer doesn’t taste that great though! Edit: Brewdog labels also came off very nicely. I’m unsure if the grimbergen bottles are less coloured or thin? (Ripe for the bin)
