    Using a 5l mini-keg

Interesting. I came across this thread and wondered what your setup was? Are they the easy 5L kegs? I have fitted a tap to a coolbox and although I have a co2 source unsure if I’ll need it!

    Swingtop bottles

I don't rate the Kilner ones. On mine the silicone seals have perished after 5 months. Maybe a bad batch. Or maybe mice got in and chewed them? My other swingtop bottles have rubber seals and they seem fine.

    Mixed gas to CO2 connection

I realised my mixed gas regulator will not fit to CO2. Oops. Plenty of time in lockdown to read up on threads and have a good laugh about it all. Anyway I think most economic and safest for health option is to get a CO2 regulator instead. However, anyone ever seen a convertor from W21.8 male...

    PerfectDraft or other chiller/dispenser

I planned to buy one but you could only seem to the kegs from one place, and looked a pain to refill for homebrew. I'm drinking from the adnams ghost ship 5L kegs. I ordered them direct from Adnams but they seem to have taken them off the site. Anyway they are sold in Tesco, and Sainsbury...

    Bottling.

Syphon in a mesh bag I found bottling painfully slow. Instead I mount the syphon and sediement trap into a half of a metal tea strainer. Made a whole in the mesh with a pencil and then clipped in the sediment trap in this stabilises the darn thing too.

    PerfectDraft or other chiller/dispenser

Perfect Draft mahcine have increased in price in the lockdown, and pub closures. I like the idea of them but the price. Each to their own but looks like a £200+ unit price. Nice present for 18th birthday though :)

    Pressuring mini kegs

There are some decent homebrew tap arrangements in the other thread. There is a punt I may try where based on the 31mm measurements (bit iffy I think on that thread measurement) I believe the black bung seal for the minikeg may fit inside the beer growler spear and still allow the barb...

    Easy Keg 5L

In boredom I deconstructed the tap. Essentially from what I can tell it’s a rotating pipe with hole that rotates in a tube within a tube ;and loads of seals. I’ll look to see if a 5/16mm stem to barb John guest fitting goes in there and pipe it off to a tap. Connecting off the 15mm looks...

    Top things to improve brews

I was thinking about priming with mini marshmallows

    Easy Keg 5L

Might work. My rig is a sodastream with a pipe connected to the mini keg using a bung and 3/8” to 1/2” barb John guest. I’ve bypassed the pressure release valve as this only works when a bottle is connected. I use the built in tap. The sodastream rigid tube bit is looking at tear downs screwed...

    brew stuck at 1020

Might try it. the smell reminds me of Wetherspoons

    brew stuck at 1020

If I have a beer (any including commercial) in a glass then once finished leave the empty glass overnight. In the morning smell the empty glass dregs - is this smell oxidation of the alcohol?

    Easy Keg 5L

Cheers. What do you or others use as the connector into the bung and or monitor/ manage leaks? Current setup is a John Guest 3/8 stem x 1/2” barb Code: PI251216S. This then goes into pvc siphon tube to a Sodastream genesis machine. Unfortunately although correct in height I couldn’t quite mount...

    brew stuck at 1020

I bottled my ones that stuck at 1020 ish with no sugar priming. Now they are really fizzy and low alcohol too. They pour to a great head but taste pretty bland. I’ll try the guidance suggested next time

    Easy Keg 5L

What are the inbuilt taps like on the 5L kegs? Do they auto close or could you run one permanently open on into a beer line and say a party tap ?

    Your Best DIY Equipment?

Machine mart sell a 16L stainless steel bucket with lid. I considered whether I could adapt to a fermenter but came to the conclusion it was 1. Unlikely to be food grade, and 2. Would be a pain to seal up the lid.

Connecting Wort Chiller to modern style tap

I forgot where it is but there is a massive John Guest catalogue online where you can look through the combinations and ratings or alternatively plumbers merchants might have it. I think I have a John guest female 3/4” bsp to 3/8” push it. I was planning to try it with 10mm copper but decided...

Connecting Wort Chiller to modern style tap

same. From the tap I run it into a 3/4” bsp washing machine hose as I know that’s pressure rated. At the wort chiller I did get specialised 1/2” bsp to metric 10mm connector s And use with the 1/2” bsp to 3/4” bsp reducer. Recently I obtained a 1x 1/2” bsp male to 2x 10mm compression copper T...

    Easy Keg 5L

looks great. Are the keg posts 1/4 bsp? I did have a think that actually a bottling gun might work in ‘reverse’ as this delivers gas , liquid on a trigger valve. The units also tear down for cleaning. I maybe an equivalent just to see if I can tap a keg with it going into a bung

What are the best types of bottles? Where do you get them from? Share your opinions...

I have a load of the Kilner 500ml bottles. Cheap online purchase but 6 bottles arrived smashed so got a part refund. They look nice but the silicone flip top seals are not great. They can also be capped. The better flip tops I have are the Aldi ones. I didn’t see them in store this year though.
