    Voss

I once made a wheat beer with Voss and it tasted like mushroom/old books. After about a month it settled into something fairly enjoyable but not at all what I was aiming for. I bought that from eBay I've used it since (Lallemand) and never got that flavour again. Usually ferment at 30+ and get...

    Base grain for most brews?

I usually buy a 25kg bag every 5-6 brews (most of my brews are around 5kg). I try a different type each time and usually buy some wheat and maybe 5 or so kg of something like Munich. I also keep a stock of some oats, caramel, chocolate and roasted barley and I find I can make almost everything I...

    Fury Tea's brewdays

So kegged these 2 today. Went quite smoothly. Choc PB milk stout: 3L of trub, pb and Cocoa nibs in this bad boy. It tastes like a really nice milk stout but I can't taste even a hint of PB - if I didn't know it was there I wouldn't be able to tell. I didn't bother taking a gravity reading...

How Quick do Hops lose their flavour?

Nice, what are you putting in the other 2?

How Quick do Hops lose their flavour?

It's a bit of a how long is a piece of string question. If you are brewing something like an NEIPA you want to drink that young. The malt profile will be quite light so there's not a whole lot of conditioning to be done. The hop profile is brighter and zestier n the first couple of months...

    Punk IPA (Incredibly Poor Ale)

Picked up 2 bottles from the shop across the road (they have a terrible range - this is the only craft type beer they do). Opened the first and took a swig, tasted like an old shoe. Poured it into a glass and it looked like a pint of mild. 2nd bottle didn't look oxidised, and maybe my taste...

    Recipe Rescue

If it was me, I'd brew the mistake and see what comes out the other end. It won't be bad I bet. You could always put a 2nd order in for the rest of the ingredients for a Vienna lager and add your wheat into that order. That way you have another beer lined up for next time! Win win!

    Fury Tea's brewdays

Peanut butter milk chocolate stout: 12L brew (but ended up with a bit more in the fermenter due to not taking into account the amount of space all the adjuncts would take up! It's close to the top of the fermenter so I just hope it's not too lively! Overnight cold steep: 100g Roasted Barley...

    First failed batch

A typical rule of thumb is 2+2+2. 2 weeks fermenting, 2 weeks 'warm conditioning' and 2 weeks 'cold conditioning'. Even when the airlock stops bubbling there is still fermentation happening so 1 week is sometimes not enough, and if you stop it early you can end up with off flavours. 2+2+2 is...

    First failed batch

Usually 7-10 days at fermentation temperature or slightly higher (if possible). The yeast likely did their job in the 2 days but they are also working on cleaning up off flavours in this time so it's always better to give them enough time to do so. You could try putting a few bottles...

    Fury Tea's brewdays

It's experiment time... Friend gave me a Simply Lager kit he was given for Xmas by his ex MIL and doesn't want... What's the fun in brewing a kit how it's meant to be brewed though? So... Peanut butter & chocolate milk stout! Doing 12L brew (to end up with 10L in my small keg). Thinking I...

    First failed batch

It could be a few things. It doesn't sound like an infection but can't rule that out. Are they overcarbonated at all? Have a read of this: https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/how-to-brew/beer-haze-cloudy-homebrew/ Another possibility is that it could be related to oxygen, or it could be...

Anyone used fresh home grown hops?

Whoops I missed this. I like hoppy beers though and I'll often put 200g of pellets into whirlpool. Honestly though I have so many hops in that I didn't really have the space to freeze them. I need to get brewing!

Anyone used fresh home grown hops?

Brewed it up today. Listened to a Brulosophy on wet hops and the guest said it's not advisable to dry hop with wet hops as it tends to impart grassy flavours, so I just threw them all into 2 additions

    Fury Tea's brewdays

First brew day in months! Having a baby really eats into your brewing time (and drinking time for that matter). My home grown hops were ready and if I didn't harvest this weekend it would probably be too late. So I thought I would keep it super simple, the base is just 5kg Vienna malt. 617g...

Anyone used fresh home grown hops?

I just harvested them - underestimated how long it would take to process so I've had a 2.5 hr mash 617g harvested - does this seem a good amount? I'll do as @An Ankoù says, half at 10 mins and half at 80c. Not even sure what type they are exactly just a gift someone got me and I grew from...

Anyone used fresh home grown hops?

I'm brewing for the first time in months. I have been growing some hops. It's not been the best year (better than the 1 hop I got last year though). They are starting to turn slightly brown so I think they are ready to go. So my plan is to just make a simple pale ale, small bittering charge...

Cheap kits sub 14£, never again !!!

Bear in mind that you could do the same thing with dried or liquid malt extract, but the beauty with the kits is they're already bittered so the boil is only for sterilisation and the cheap kits are not actually that much more expensive than the same quantity of DME. You might need to add some...
