Should I Just Ignore My Hydrometer Readings?

The Mystery continues. Tonight I brewed another batch of extract IPA. Instruction on the pack estimates once u add sugar u will get approx 5%ABV. I tried it with 1pint less tonight ie 39pints to see if any difference. Of course there wasn't lol. You've guessed it OG 1032!!!.....It was a 1.6kg...

Corny Keg Gas Posts on a King Keg Lid

Please excuse my ignorance and lack of any understanding of anything engineering but id like to ask the following. Is it possible to drill a hole in a King keg Top Tap Lid and connect a Corny Keg Ball Lock Gas Post to enable me to pressurise the Keg using my Co2 tank? If so can I ask the size...

Nitrous Oxide Bulbs in a King Keg

I am hoping to make a Coopers Irish Stout (extract kit) and put it in my King Keg Top Tap. The reason I want to use my King Keg is that I have a sparkler tap suitable for Stouts fitted to it plus I can add Nitrous Oxide 8g Gas Bulbs to hopefully give it that creamy Guinness Smoothness. That is...

    Purging

Can I ask something Im never very clear about. Its about purging the headspace in my filled corny keg. When I give a few blast on my pressure release valve to get rid of the oxygen should the CO2 still be connected and running or turned off? Also when doing a quick forced carbonation ie (rocking...

    Welded or Unwelded Corny Kegs?

Excuse my ignorance but I would like to know what the difference is between a welded and unwelded Corny Keg? I see some good deals online but before I purchase I was curious of the difference and which one would be better...ty

    Stuck fermentation.

I brewed a mangrove jack extract kit on Friday evening. I pitched yeast at around 16 degrees. My FV is now sitting under my kitchen table with a towel wrapped around it but there has been absolutely no sign of any fermentation taking place thus far. Any suggestions?

    Rajas Reward Stuck Fermentation

yes 10g of kit yeast...but it was a £25 premium kit so I would be expecting more from the yeast. The pack says b "Beer Yeast 20-25 lit) 322052-211743....Dont know if any of these numbers are relevant but thats what they say on the pack.

Should I Just Ignore My Hydrometer Readings?

36 hours are I brewed it is bubbling along nicely . I took a hydrometer reading in a test tube. I don't know what good (if any) it will do but I was just curious. Now at room temperature and obviously with the addition of yeast into the wort my reading is 1030. Is this just useless info or would...

Should I Just Ignore My Hydrometer Readings?

Should I Just Ignore My Hydrometer Readings?

i gave the ingredients a really good long stir so i dont think it will be that. as a matter of interest if it isn't stirred properly at this stage will the ingredients still ferment out fully and give the expected ABV?

Should I Just Ignore My Hydrometer Readings?

I measured and marked my FV at exactly 40 pints so I know that's 100% accurate but I think an OG of 1032 would be struggling to give me 4.8% ABV would it not? So do I just trust there's something wrong with the hydrometer reading for whatever reason and just go with the estimated ABV on the box?

Should I Just Ignore My Hydrometer Readings?

I just tested it in 20 C water and it read 0. However on the many occasions I have made beer I have never got OG readings as low as 1032 after using a tin of extract and a kilo of brewing sugar it just doesn't seem right to me. It has always been in the 1040/1044 region. Also the 3.4kg Bulldog...

Should I Just Ignore My Hydrometer Readings?

I cant get used to my replacement hydrometer which I got a while back. This evening I made a (1.75 kg) malt extract IPA + 1kg Brewing Sugar made to 40 pints. Once mixed and the temp at 25 C I took a reading which was 1032 which to me seems very low. The hydrometer is calibrated to 20 C. This...

    Hopping Extract Beer

I have only ever made extract beers and have no ambitions to get into all grain. Over the past couple of years however I have began to dry hop which makes a huge difference. At the moment I am only interested in IPA style brews which I find delicious. I initially used 1 can of pre-hopped malt...

Best to take an OG reading before or after adding bittering hops?

I know this sounds like a basic question but I am new to the bittering hop game. The reason I am bittering in the first place is that the bargain LME I bought is unhopped .I therefore don't know when's best to take a hydrometer reading. A. Before I add the cooled down bittering hop solution or...

Can I save Overly Sweet Malty Bottled IPA

I made the mistake of brewing with unhopped malt extract resulting in overly sweet, malty beer. I managed to save the two batches I kegged by bittering around 18g per batch of summit in boiling water for an hour. Both ethese now taste absolutely fine. However I have around 40 bottles which are...
