    Beer kit enhancers

Hi all, In the past I've been an AG brewer, but in recent times have fallen into kit brewing for reasons of time mainly. I find I have got best results with the Muntons one can kit + 1 kilo of DME formula. Particularly big fan of the Yorkshire Bitter + 1 kilo of medium DME. My question is...

    Make mine a Mockeson

I like Mackeson Stout and drink it quite often when I want a tasty low abv beer. It's 2.8 per cent abv. There is a Graham wheeler recipe in his European beers book at 3per cent, and one for a stronger export version. Happy to dig out the recipe if there is interest. I had the idea to to a kit...

    Brupak Colne Valley Bitter

You used to see Brupaks kits at pretty much all half decent hb shops. Now they are a rarity. Would not be surprised if this flavour issue is result of stock that has been sitting around a long time waiting to be sold. I think they reviewed a kit on Partridge and it didn't get a great review

    Greene king ipa or similar

Nice find, but that recipe looks too strong with an OG of 1051. I would expect it to be closer to 1036 for an abv of 3.6%. I agree with the comment above that it's quite a nice session beer if well kept etc.

    My first extract brew

When I started brewing years ago I skipped onto AG quite quickly after a couple of kits, bypassing extract (except one beer which I think I messed up). In the last few years I’ve done some occasional extract brewing with DME and steeping crystal and chocolate malts (milds mostly). They have been...

    Double roasted Crystal

I’ve used DRC and special b (separately) in a couple of milds I’ve made. The one with DRC tasted drier and I did not like it as much, but the recipe was not the same (it also contained brown malt). The special b flavour seemed quite pronounced in the other mild (not in a bad way) to me at least...

    Returning to brewing

Welcome back to brewing! Great hobby. I returned to it after a ten year gap (that was about five years ago) and glad I did! Forums such as this are a huge source of knowledge and information

    Hello from Kiel, Germany

Hi Kristoffer, welcome to the forum! I used to live near Eastbourne so I know that part of the world well. Nice to see you using UK hops and making some old British beers. I agree goldings and fuggles are great and also recommend Challenger, First Gold hops and Brambling Cross if you feel the...

    Closure ?? Brew store Edinburgh

That’s a shame. I went into their shop when I was up in Edinburgh a couple of years ago and it seemed like a decent, well stocked shop with helpful/friendly staff. Such a shame when we lose decent Home brew shops. Nothing beats being able to pop into an actual shop and pick up what you need when...

    A Long Time Ago . . .

I thoroughly enjoyed watching that! Thanks for sharing (and making it!). Really nice to see the innovations you made later, but also nice to see the old kit continuing to be used.

    Brew years resolutions 2022

In 2021 I moved on to bottling after years of using pressure barrels. In the past I’ve always made 4%-ish bitters and milds, but I’m going to branch out a bit and make a few more styles of ale, given the possibilities afforded by different levels of carbonation etc. from bottling. A radical...

    Re-Hydrating Yeast

I’ve never noticed any difference between beer made with rehydrated versus non-rehydrated dried yeast. I don’t bother now. I doubt this will cause any issues, assuming you pitch enough of it

    Brewing with LME

As I understand it, the Firkin pubs used to use malt extract, and it’s been a long time since they were around.... I would be a bit surprised if modern brewpubs would make beers with extract. If it’s really old it’s going to make dubious quality beer I would expect. Hopefully it’s still ok, in...

    Brewing with LME

How old is that stuff if you don't mind me asking? The label looks quite old....

    R.I.P Thread.

Sad news indeed. Saw him at the Roots Festival in Brighton about 20 years ago and he was eccentric to say the last! So many great records produced

    Its too hot.

As a southerner living on the North East, I can say that getting too hot is not a problem here!
