My (almost!) first AG brew day...

I started looking at the 'proper' sparge heaters, but for the cost of them, there was no way I could justify it. I then started looking at propane rings that I could use with the gas tank we have for the pizza oven.. but again, they weren't cheap, and I would still need a big pot. The Aldi...

My (almost!) first AG brew day...

Thanks. I did think about that - putting the extra into the brew bucket and then wrapping it up a fleece. Its a 30L vessel though, so with 22L needed for mash, it would still be quite short unless I heat, drain, top up and then heat again. The Aldi warmer was only £30 though.. :)

My (almost!) first AG brew day...

My first AG brew day (almost!)…! I used to brew kits back in my Uni days – I produced the kinds of beer that affected your sight, and gave you a headache from a single pint. It was nasty stuff! Fast forward 20 years to about 2019 and the Mrs bought me a 5L all grain kit – the kind someone buys...

    Cold step mash?

Thanks for the reply. It's this kit... I've dropped them an email. Italian Style Hoppy Pils *NEW* All Grain Ingredient Kit I have another that's a more straightforward recipe - maybe I'll start with that instead!

    Cold step mash?

First AG brew planned for the weekend... And having read and watched loads of guides, I've been thrown by the kit instructions! This says start the mash at 20c? So I mash in at only 20c, set the temp to ramp up to 66c, hold for 10, then increase again? Max mash time is then the ramp times...

When mashing, is there a need to add the ~5L of space below the malt pipe to the calculated mash water volume? Even if circulating the water?

I've picked up a basic 12" bazooka from ebay. It's seems a bit coarser than the stock one so hopefully won't clogg as much. Will write up my brew day this weekend with a few pics.

Does the auto thing flick to the next stage automatically or does it just chime and only moves when you hit a button?

    Klarstein mundschenk mash question

How did you get on? Any lessons learned? First AG brew, and first brew with this, planned for the weekend. Did you sparge by just jugging warmed water over the raised malt pipe?

I got the EU plug too - but having ordered from Germany, its no great surprise. Planning my first brew this weekend - this one from GetErBrewed Italian Style Hoppy Pils *NEW* All Grain Ingredient Kit Just trying to decide how to sparge, or whether to just do a full volume boil. I dont have...

Fired up for the first time this morning and ran for 30mins at 60C with some vwp recirculating. All good... But note to self... Even if the timer for the 30 mins has finished and its cooling, the pump doesnt automatically turn off! 🚿🙈 Got a nice looking fountain when I took the recirculation...

Is Tesco Ashback water still a good option?

I did a quick compare with the Ashbeck when I was picking it up, and yeh - looks a bit nuts!

Is Tesco Ashback water still a good option?

I've just been into tesco and picked up 30l of ashbeck. I also noticed they have a cheaper 'mineral' water too... Specs attached. Looks pretty stacked tho compared to ashbeck!

Is Tesco Ashback water still a good option?

Thanks. When I said I'm early in my journey... I meant I have an All In One ready to go, and the first AG recipe kit is with DPD and on the way from GeterBrewed! I'll start with Ashbeck and see how that goes for the first brew.

Is Tesco Ashback water still a good option?

Interesting.. We have a spotless water point not too far away, and I could easily fill old Ashbeck 5L bottles. I'm early within my all grain journey, and to be honest I cant really be arsed with water profiles etc yet! Using Spotless would be cheaper than Ashbeck.. but if I dont want to do...
