    My Holy Grail

Jof made a comment in another thread about carbonation. He advised (from memory) adding more sugar to a couple of bottles to see how it goes. As you're disappointed with your carbonation, I'd suggest doing say half with the level of sugar (not drops) recommended by various tables, and put more...

    My Holy Grail

Bit late to the party, here, but well said Clarence. Not talking specifically about this thread, but in general on this forum, there are a few posters who only seem to be able to criticise rather than encourage and support. There's nothing more likely to put people off from asking for help than...

This will seem a strange topic but I think it's relevant here

Well, as you don't know anything about me, my garden or my locality, or indeed anything other than the figures you quote, it's not an educated observation, just a comment. However, to correct your comment, I don't go out aiming to kill any number of slugs, within any particular time period...

    No chill

Many food safe plastics shouldn't be exposed to temps above 80 degrees C. To save water. Make large blocks of ice from coke bottles or juice cartons to cool your water in a sink etc. Or use those blue cool blocks. You can probably just use the bottle as is, without breaking the ice out. Link...

    No chill

I've come across several situations in my working life where processes have been used without any evidence that they were required. Of course, suggesting they stopped using the process met with horror and absolute refusal they'd "always done it like this". I'm not doubting your brewing...

    Is this normal?

Hmmm. I don't understand how I can expect to lose 6L in boil off, when I started out with only 5.2L. I was trying to make beer, not dried, baked on malt and a burned out pot. Or maybe I misunderstand you? My liquid losses were about 60% (3/5.2). The figures I see for evaporation are between...

    Is this normal?

I think the boil lost was about 3 L, maybe slightly more. By topping up to the 4.5L, the gravity came down to expected. When I put the original wort in the FV, the OG was 1.08, it was supposed to be 1.044. After diluting, the OG was 1.042. Brew father might be a good idea. I'm just learning how...

    Is this normal?

You can see the gas pressure in the bubbler. For a small volume, it's bubbling well.

    Is this normal?

Thanks Roomy, nice of you too follow here. Yes, 4L give or take. I must admit when I saw tht trub, I was tempted to tip it down the drain, but I thought even if it turned out dreadful, there was something to learn from it.

    Is this normal?

It's quite possible I misinterpreted or otherwise made a mistake with the scant instructions just a list of figures really. However it still seems like a lot of trub. Obviously I'm not going to get 4.5L out of it unless I include the trub, more likely 4L.

    Is this normal?

Thanks for your replies. It wasn't possible to leave the trub in the kettle because it was so shallow my siphon wouldn't work - small volume of liquid, wide pan. I tried decanting it with a cup but when I realised that I'd only end up with a litre or 2 of wort, and how long it would take, and...

Irish moss question while my brew is cooling

This will seem a strange topic but I think it's relevant here

Well, I've done my first AG brew. I left the grain to air dry until I was finished, and then wondered what I was gong to do with it as I hadn't decided. I did eat a spoonful or so.... it wasn't unpleasant tasting, rather like one of those loaves with everything in it, 7 grain or something. I...

    Is this normal?

Through good news is that's there's already fermenting activity.

    Is this normal?

Today I did my first AG kit. The instructions were non-existent, just a list of times, temperatures etc. That led to me starting a thread asking for info about using the Irish Moss that was supplied. Unfortunately, the volume in the pot was so low, I couldn't siphon and had to pour...

Irish moss question while my brew is cooling

Ok. Thanks for the replies. I tried siphoning, but couldn't get the siphon working, I read just pumping the wort through and it was spraying around. I think it read the wide pan with the shallow wort. In the end I had to pour it in the fermenter. That's when the next concern came up. I'll...

Irish moss question while my brew is cooling

Ok samale, thanks. But do you mean siphon transfer and leave stuff behind?

Irish moss question while my brew is cooling

Done my first AG brew. The kit came with a small pack of Irish moss to be added 5 minutes before boil finish. Done that. The brew is cooling. Do I siphon into the fermenter to leave settled sediment behind. Or pour it all until the fermenter? The instructions make no mention of what to do...

Brewzilla dead - burnt out socket

Absolutely. You wouldn't constantly run your car at maximum revs. The problem is, this system is running close to the maximum with little capacity left. Over time, if plugs, sockets leads etc have been bought on the cheap, you can expect problems. Also like to add that I missed the earlier...

Brewzilla dead - burnt out socket

UK & European electricity was harmonised in 2003. In the UK electricity should be supplied @230V - 6% +10% and @ 50Hz +/-1%, and at up to 132kV +/- 6%, and over 132kV +/- 10% (Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002). This means the domestic voltage is allowed to vary...
