Alpha Acid % and Hop Flavour

Thanks for the replies, all interesting stuff. As they are low alpha hops I will probably increase a touch should I go ahead and brew, as I would prefer it on the hoppier side and there'll be marginal bitterness effect from increasing a hopstand at 2.1% @Alan_Reginato - how did you find the...

Alpha Acid % and Hop Flavour

Has anyone found any correlation between lower AA% hops and hop flavour/aroma. I ask as I was looking at a recipe the other night using willamette and styrian goldings at 4% AA ish each. Checked CML and their stocks for both are around the 2% mark. I know AA contributes bitterness when boiled...

What are you drinking tonight 2023.

Had a few of these tonight whilst having a dry run with my new AIO toy. Thanks again @Jiffy176 😊😊 Wife always works NYE so what better way to spend it!

    Acetaldehyde?

Sorry @DocAnna, missed you’re post when replying earlier. As H says, switching to US-05 and repeating under the same conditions has produced something in much happier with. I’ve discovered I have a cupboard holding a solid 16deg recently. I plan to re-visit this brew with Liberty Bell...

    Acetaldehyde?

Probably reflects my trying to pin down what exactly it is. I think it’s best described as an appley cidery flavour, which overpowered anything else. It has in fairness, mellowed a touch, but still the dominant flavour. With the advice above I put it down to a lot of esters from fermenting on...

    Acetaldehyde?

Thanks all for the advice. Aforementioned small batch done with US-05 was bottled a week ago and I’ve cracked one for an early taste. Much more to my liking and rather moreish! Gonna be a challenge to leave the other bottles for a few more weeks to condition 🤣🤣 The fact I got to hear before a...

What are you drinking tonight 2023.

I was reliably informed recently that Mad Squirrel Big Sea is a very nice drop. Haven’t seen it anywhere to try yet. Any good?

Yeast Experiment / Mosaic Pale Ale

Haha, I thought this too. Apparently our two year old and grandparents / extended family negate this somewhat… 🤣🤣 Ooh that’s good to hear. I was hoping to have a go at a couple of lagers before temps warm up in readiness for summer. I may be in luck 😁😁

Yeast Experiment / Mosaic Pale Ale

Sounds good, and subtly different from the others. Which gives me a nice set of four to try. Five Clipper Pia Hog Will likely do this early in the New Year unless I get a day spare over Christmas! Will update back with results. Cheers.

Yeast Experiment / Mosaic Pale Ale

I like the look of Hog as it is happier at higher temps. Hadn't thoguht of Hell. I do have a pack of Kolsch in the fridge so could try that.. That's interesting to hear, I expected it to be quite punchy from the description. Descriptively it sounds worth trying for sure. Good to hear, I...

    Is this normal?

Looks good. You could try putting the recipe into Brewfath. Free to download and use and, in this case, it will help you work out how much water you need to start with to en ud with 4.5L. If you have a wide shallow pot I'd guess you're losing a lot to boil off, possibly as much as 2 litres...

Yeast Experiment / Mosaic Pale Ale

Hi all. Next brew will be a Mosaic Pale. Maris Otter / Munich / Wheat grain bill. mainly mosaic hops in a big hopstand / dry hop with some centennial. Mosaic intended to be the star. Initially I planned to do this with CML 5, but I'm now thinking it's a good chance to split down and do some...

    Is this normal?

I did a 1 gallon brew a while back where, for reasons I won’t go into, I ended up with all the trub in the FV. You’ll be amazed how much it settles out and compacts down 👍👍

First pint from the keg of blonde. Lost some of the hop aroma but very easy drinking, and clearing nicely. Glass was a present from our niece..
