What goes up must come down?

Very much had the same when I was first brewing beer and I fell into a 'hole' where I didn't really want to share my beer as it didn't seem that good and I worried I was imposing it in people. I stopped brewing for a bit (mainly due to covid stopping play) but after a few bought beers I...

Bottlers: Cold crashing with no oxygen prevention

I cold crash in my primary fermentation bucket - I try not to remove the lid other than adding any dry hops - so I hope the co2 'blanket' will keep the oxygen away. But I'm not that careful, and can't say I've ever had any issues with off oxygenated flavours. I usually open syphon to my keg, so...

    Stuck Fermentation US-05

Your set up might have given you a greater efficiency, or maybe the first reading wasn't taken at exactly 20c? Regardless, I bet you'll have a good beer in the end

Any ideas where I went wrong?

Yes, I always ferment for at least 2 weeks (unless pressure fermenting) in the bucket. Then I put the whole bucket in my keezer at 1c for about 2 days - then bottle of keg. The 'cold crash' helps the bits fall to the bottom - they are still there just nicely packed down and out the way. Before...

Hello!...and thanks for all the help so far!

Love that bar! Looks amazing. Welcome and happy brewing!

    Cold crash pressure fermentor

5 or so psi should be plenty - I'd go 10 to be safe. What psi will you be fermenting at?

    Stuck Fermentation US-05

I'd just leave well alone - you want likely 2 weeks to be confident the yeast has finished doing its thing (at those temps) - if anything I'd lower your temp to 18c and don't rush it.

Keg priming and Nitrogen use question

Nice, and yes the priming sugar calculation is the same for keg or bottle. If you want to force carb you'll have to change to metal kegs - I do not believe you can force carb (or force nitrogen?) in those kegs, but I may be wrong!

Any ideas where I went wrong?

Yes, might well be that - sometimes my 20+ litre brews take 24 hours to get down to pitching temp. Trying to think what else might cause the issue - it could be that mashing is different at 5 and 10 litres? But I often get 'cauliflower floaters' in my all grain brews like this The magic of a...

Any ideas where I went wrong?

Looks like most of my brews before I cold crash - I wouldn't say that was worrying unless it was obviously white mould, which I don't think it is? If it is then the issue would be sanitisation - adding dry hops is a minor risk, but not been an issue for me so far. On your 10litre vs 5 issues...

    Mash Rests

Very interesting read - I had wondered about the impact of starting a mash 'cold' - adding the grain before my all in one is turned on, then allowing to heat to mash temp - I wondered if this would shorten the mash, or have any other benefits. But since I normally brew very early, I currently...

    Malt mill for rolling/flaking

Hi, all the millers I am aware of grind the grain, not roll it. I remember seeing porridge pat rollers in a vegan shop some time ago, so sure they must be sold somewhere!

Fridge to Brew Chamber Wiring Modification.

Nicely done! I just used an inkbird clone (plug temperature controller) in my keezer, and would do the same in a fridge for simplicity and save doing things 'properly'. But nice to see how it can be done - sure will save someone else some heartache!

Beer Engine, or Hand Pump, pulling from 3 kegs

No issues of you are happy to throw away some beer. My engine holds a whole half pint in the pump plus more in the lines, so I'd guess close to a pint to mix or lose. I wouldn't mind the mixed beer, but will mean that each time you change you are really still drinking a pint of the old beer...

    Culture storage

Yes sounds right. You might want to either save some boiled wort or make another small starter wort to wake up the yeast cake.

to sell or not to sell.....

Sounds like a great set up and a fair price, but you might well get more splitting it up and selling the bits. I'd personally hold onto it if you have the room - my kids are 6 and 8 now and I have loads more time again compared to when the were little, that said I don't brew as much as I'd...

    Nerdy stuff

Yeah I think it is more from cat food, than from anything else - as no the bins are always shut tight (the bin men here won't take a bin if it is even slightly open). Not sure where there are more flies here, but it certainly appears that way - but only for about 6 weeks a year, so no big drama

    more should do this

Which would you rather swim in? I used to swim in the pond as a kid, full of fish and never got ill. I'd not swim in one even with a single human (or dog for that matter) cr@p in
