    First yeast starter for tomorrow

If you have a decent amount of yeast, I would just pitch it. I re-use yeast routinely with no issues and it does not usually need a starter.

    Sherry-like Flavour.

The sherry like taste is most likely due to oxidation and perhaps in part to the yeast used. Lack of carbonation would be due to leaky storage in bottles / keg or due to no priming sugar being added.

How much whisky to add to beer?

I did the Greg Hughes Vanilla Bourbon Stout some years ago and it was awful. I would not suggest adding whisky to beer in the same glass. Maybe in the same stomach?

    New Year - Slid Brewday

OK, so done a couple of beers on the new GF and it saves at least an hour not transferring wort to the Peco Boiler to boil and then back to the GF to do the chilling. However, the fact that any malt or hop bits get captured in the transfer (via a BIAB bag) meant that less wort was lost overall...

Do you live where your partner was from?

We live 10 miles or so from her Mum & Dad, because SWMBO would have trusted no-one else but her Mum to help bringing up the kids. This could be quite a common situation, I feel.

Malt miller speckled hen won’t clear!

Liberty Belle is much less flocculant than, say US 05 (my go-to for many things). Why you added 2xpacks I know not. 1 pack does 25L with some ease in my experience. Gravity will drop out the yeast in time, but it does stick much higher up any bottle than most yeasts, so there is a chance that...

Optimum Amount Of Liquid Malt Extract?

Hi, I guess the first question is whether you have a taste for cheap supermarket beer? For many years I bought the 250ML bottles of beers made in Northern France and surroundings. I was very happy with the Coopers kits, done with brew enhancer, or perhaps 500g DME and 1kg sugar. In a sense, if...

    Improving kits

In reply to the original enquiry, this is the way forwards: https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/have-a-go-at-simple-ag.51779/ Have a go at simple All Grain. You can add a 10L to 12L AG to a Wilko, or perhaps better, Coopers kit and get very good beer indeed, especially as you have temp...

    Calcium chloride substitute

I think the OP indicated he was doing an American Pale Ale. Calcium Chloride, I understand is used to accentuate a malty flavour and Calcium Sulphate for hoppy (US IPA) styles.

Stella Unfiltered Yeast Starter. It Lives! (I think)

That should be an interesting experiment. My thinking is that a HB Stella should be pretty good, if that is your beer style.

    Flavoring a Saison

That, my friend, should be simply immense. A great beer.

    Old hops + Malt

The hops will be fine for bittering at the very least. As for the malt, you could try tasting it? If is seems OK, maybe it will be. Mash low, mash long and give it punt. It will not be the worst beer ever made, by a long way.

Is all rye malt around 30 ECB?

Absolutely magic rant, peebee, are you descended from the Druids, perchance?

What do you stand your Kettle /Brewzilla / Grainfather /Brewtools etc on?

On the Kitchen floor. I do the cooking in there, so by extension, it is my space and I get to brew there, by some sort of territorial right that goes beyond even human ideas about space ownership and proliferates throughout the animal kingdom.

    Nightmare on Brew Day

This sounds much like my experiences with #1 GF. I must have done around half the 186 brews using a method similar to the one you describe - mash and sparge in the GF and then transfer to a separate boiler using a plastic jug (via a BIAB grain bag) boil and then return wort to GF to do the chill...

    New Year - Slid Brewday

The New GF unit arrived during the week and I did a US Stout (8% Crystal, 8% Black Malt, 84% Maris Otter) using Simcoe and Summitt hops with US 05. This went smoothly and without having to transfer the wort around. The younger daughter's new-ish BF was shadowing me to find out more and...

    New Year - Slid Brewday

Hmm, not posted anything here for ages. Main reason is that I have done nothing particularly new, interesting or even different for months. Golden Ale, a Weissbier, Orkney Dark, Old Peculier clones, Patersbeer and Tripel with M31, all done before. The Grainfather has cut out around 80C on the...

    Brewing with jam

I feel he may be laying low in a coffin somewhere. Maybe Grimsby. So if you live in Grimsby, leave out some beer as bait, it may distract the monster. Wear a silver cross at night and sleep with a Garlic Clove near at hand.ashock1

    Brewing with jam

SWMBO loves going to Lakeland, the vendors of hideously expensive kitchen Tat. They do cans of Marmalade stuff (~1.6kg) that you add 1.8kg of sugar and some water to and they give you ~6x450g of Marmalade, or 3x900g in the vastly overpriced jars they also sell. I have added 900g (Big Jar), so...

    Which side of the bed.

I sleep on my right side, especially since breaking the arm bone as it enters the left shoulder on Boxing Day 3 years ago. SWMBO has a bad habit of sleeping on her back and snoring like an overloaded steam train.
