    New Year - Slid Brewday

Still little more to add to the above, to be honest. Here was yesterday's beer: Maris Otter 4.1kg Dark Crystal 0.4kg Sugar 0.5kg Rakua Hops 25g at each of FW and 15mins T-58 re-used. Nice, boring and uneventful brew-day. The hops cost me £1 as they are 2020 harvest. Probably less aroma than...

    BZ 3.1.1 Pump Noise

How many times have you brewed using this model? Should be good for well over a hundred uses. Is the pump pushing out just liquid, or is there some air coming through? That might be part of the issue?

    Yeast packet opening failure!

Plus one on the Belgian Ale yeast, as An Ankou points out, the other two and rather niche.

    Records

I still have quite a number of vinyl LP's which sort of represent my rather distant past. I have turntable that I used to digitize the best of them and then load them up to a I-Pod. There is stuff on there that does not get played much on Planet Rock or Radio X Classic Rock, but I don't have...

    Re-using yeast from current brew

I routinely re-use yeast, by basically pouring the trub from a (New Sachet) brew into a jug and thence into 4-6 250ml bottles (formerly containing lemonade) which go in the fridge. I only ever go one generation down and chuck anything that has been in the fridge longer than a few (3-4) months...

    Does this look infected

I have no idea of the context or really what it looks like. So, is in a fermenter? If so, for how long, what temps etc. Where has it been kept, what sort of experience do you have as a brewer, etc, etc. The more details we have, the more likely you are to get a helpful response.

    Cheap Hops

Tupperware is a good idea, I think. I just use a clip from Lakeland, as the Mrs buys some every time we go up to the Lakes.

    Cheap Hops

That is good to know about Spitting Feathers! I have not seen Seb (the proprietor) since he had to close the shop on Tonge Moor Rd a few years back. Also will sort out my WHS account and see if there are any bargains left, though buying cheap hops and leaving them for another couple of years in...

    Holidays

The Covid period sort of cemented what has happened to Society over many years - possibly back to 1945. The idea that Rights were individual, but without any of the corresponding Responsibilities and that Entitlements were also sacrosanct, but somehow dissociated from actual Obligations...

    Water use

I generally estimate that a 25L beer will use around 125L of water altogether. The estimates of water usage for commercial breweries are typically 5-6 times the actual water usage to volume of beer produced. In the UK we use drinking water for washing, including washing cars, and, in our version...

extract boil do I need some irish moss in it

I would imagine not. The boiling is all done in the process of boiling down the mash to get the DME.

Should a thin, or a thick mash, give higher mash efficiency?

Sorry for the slow reply, life and work have both been hectic of late! 4.5-5kg sweet spot is for total grain bill Doughing in is the time when you add the grain a bit at a time and stir the wort after each small addition 25L is the minimum volume I am aiming for in the primary FV. After racking...

Should a thin, or a thick mash, give higher mash efficiency?

Very interesting thread. It seems I have now done over 200 brews using 2 GF 30 systems and having cocked up (JUST SO) many times and in many different ways, many of which involved jugging wort from one container to another, recoding BHE using BrewMate software and even learning some stuff on the...

    Sparge over flow

Good advice, here! The Grain bits can be stopped by using a tea strainer over the central overflow pipe. If you dough in / mash in slowly and thoroughly (it takes about 20 mins minimum) and use some rice hulls for either wheat / rye grain bills or very large grain bills, there should be no...

    Raspberry

A Wheat Beer with 2.5kg of raspberries works well. I find it a bit much, so you could reduce the raspberry content. Basically, the end result, with a pale-ish sort of a base beer, will smell, taste and look like raspberries, so Belgian Strong Golden might be a fit?

    Getting back into the Hobby…..

39 days to Christmas, so you might get something OK to drink in time. 14 days in the FV, then 25 in the bottle. Should do the job,

I am going to try an English Lager tomorrow with XPMO, Pilgrim and the *** end of a bag of Aurora. Notty ale yeast.

    Rugby World Cup 2023

What a finish to a washed out game. Hendre Pollard wins the game with a 48m kick. England can't possibly be upset, as the fifth best team in the NH. What a travesty the Groups were. NZ to be victorious?
