    Secret Santa Reviews 2020!

First up for me is "Kermit pilsner" which poured with good clarity and good carbonation. Clean, crisp flavour with a slightly sweet/fruit note fading to a refreshing dry finish. Thanks Santa, this was a very nicely made beer, I've not attempted this style yet but am now planning to do so, if I...

    Secret Santa Reviews 2020!

Yes this one was mine, sorry it wasn't for you @Cwrw666, pass on my apologies to your Mrs :laugh8: and Merry Christmas! acheers. Both @dave_77 and @strange-steve mentioned the colour which I agree was darker than planned (I think I accidentally used dark Munich instead of light), and I agree...

    Strange-steve's Homebrew Reviews

I haven't posted it anywhere yet, but happy to share! 5kg Pilsner malt (I used UK Warminster lager malt as it was what I had on hand, so not completely to style) 500g Munich malt (I thought it was light, but may have been dark judging by the resulting colour) 150g Dextrose It was a 16l batch...

    Fermenting vessel heating

I use a heat pad and inkbird itc-308 (both available from Amazon or many homebrew shops) - you can connect just the heat side without a fridge (particularly this time of year) if you have a cool spot somewhere you can put the fermenter. I wrap it in insulation like @DCBC and it works fine...

    Adjustable beer faucet - thoughts?

I used to use a flow control tap directly connected to the keg like this, and while it does work it's prone to foaming even with the flow control dialled down. Since then I've switched to a pluto gun connected via a length of beer line and the resistance from the line makes the pour much more...

Pricing and stock levels in a covid world

It might help to be more specific about which products and prices you're comparing e.g 4 times the price of what? I use Star-San as my no-rinse sanitiser, and I last ordered it in February 2019 where a 32oz bottle was 19.99 ex vat from the Malt Miller. I've nearly run out, and looking today...

Wheat Malt and Oats IPA proportions?

I'm planning to get an IPA on this weekend, usingingredients I have on hand: UK lager malt (Warminster) Wheat Malt Porridge Oats Small bittering addition with Magnum 300g Citra (probably 100g in the whirlpool, two dry-hop additions of 100g, one during fermentation and one after?) Ferment with...

    Hopcat fiasco :(

Could you connect two T pieces to one of these helix coils, so that it's possible to filter both the pump inlet and tap outlet on a RoboBrew? With a false bottom I don't find the trub from the tap too much of an issue, but the pump does tend to block with any amount of loose hops so I'm...

    Where to buy bottles from

Yeah fair enough - I misread the 7-10 days lead time to mean "about a week", but they turned up today (13 days, but only 9 working days so within the time stated on their site). Do new bottles need cleaning, or is just sanitizing them enough?

    Where to buy bottles from

<sigh> Thanks for the info - I ordered 23/9 so I guess I'll have to come up with another plan for bottling this weekend :hat:

    Where to buy bottles from

For anyone else looking, I ordered 50 of the Steinie bottles 10 days ago and they've not yet turned up (also no communication re dispatch), so I wouldn't recommend this seller if you need bottles in a hurry asad1

Carb drops instead of batch priming to limit NE IPA oxidation?

I recently started fermenting in a corny keg after a similar experience with a DIPA that oxidized very quickly. So far I've been doing a pressure transfer to a purged keg which works well, but for some styles I'd still like to bottle condition (and avoid the potential o2 exposure of the...

    Why are hydrometer so small?

I use one of these large-scale hydrometers Brewing Equipment - Testing and Measuring Equipment - Large Hydrometer 1000-1060 - The Malt Miller | The Malt Miller It's much easier to read than the some others, but has a more limited range (there is another available which covers higher gravity...

Non temp control on "warm" ferment beers...

I've not got space for a brew fridge at all currently so have a compromise which is a heat pad combined with an inkbird, that works well to reduce the dip in temp overnight, avoids the heat pad getting things too hot during the day, and allows for ramping the temp towards the end of...

    Circulation during fermentation

Sounds similar to a Yorkshire Square process for rousing - I can't imagine much need for that on a homebrew scale though, where the yeast activity naturally mixes the fermenting wort in a relatively small container?
