    Hazelwood Brewday

I’m thinking of investing in a basket but have a few questions, Hazel, if you could help? I’ve still got the original tap on my cygnet. Once you’ve adjusted the legs on the basket, would it sit above the level of the tap? I’ve also fitted a small probe thermometer on mine. I would obviously...

    I it generally cheaper

I only started brewing again last summer. I’m a retired “bean counter” and do enjoy tracking the costs and working out how much each brew is. My initial equipment was bought 2nd hand and to date, I’ve spent just over £1,300 on kit & ingredients. I’m up to Brew 27 and have produced 1,120 0.5l...

"Middle Flavour" Hops in Punk IPA

The recipe that I‘ve got in “Craft Brew“ by Euan Ferguson has the middle hops added at 15 minutes. It’s unclear how long the boil is for but the first hops are added at 80 minutes, so I assume an 80 minute or 90 minute boil. For info, the fermentation instructions are 5 days at 19/66, then dry...

£13.30 for 25kg bag of Pale Malt - North West England and the Midlands

Hi Obadiah & Chopps I’m a bit late to the party but it’s taken a while to plan my brews for 2021. I’m interested in: 2 x 25kg of Maris Otter. 3kg bags of: Dark Crystal Brown Wheat Roasted Barley Munich (x2) 1 kg of caps. Preferably gold but any colour as a second choice (as long as they’re...

    DIY false bottom for Burco

Hi Foxy I’m interested in this solution but a bit confused. Without the spring being extended, how does the wort get through it? Can you provide a link to the type of spring you’ve got? Is the end that is not connected to the outlet tap blanked off?

    Platform scales

I use a 2 litre calibrated jug for measuring water but also use it when measuring my pale malt, with my digital kitchen scales. I simply “tare” the scales with the empty jug, then scoop a full container from my 25kg bag. I weigh each scoop (about 900g) and empty it into my grain bag, keeping a...

    Faulty inkbird?

I bought my 308 in early August and it’s been faultless since then for 10 brews ....... until this week. It was set at 18 degrees for my Lynx Honey Ale on Friday. All fine over the weekend and then on Tuesday I noticed that the temp of the FV and brew fridge had dropped to 10...

    Dark Rock Brewing

I brewed a Nelson Sauvin SMASH from them which was very good and have brewed another one since from my own ingredients. I also use the new shop, as they’re not too far away. Some hops I bought recently didn’t have the AA % marked but they were very helpful. A quick e-mail and got the answer...

    Heavy lifting.

I’ve used the same method as you. Not much use if you brew outside or in a nice kitchen but if you‘re a shed or garage brewer, it’s perfect. I have a chest freezer for my brew fridge, so a lot of heavy lifting for a 25l batch. I bought a Mannesman block & tackle for about £10 and fixed it to...

    Burco boiler modifications??

I bought mine 2nd hand and have used it for 12 BIAB brews since June. it works really well. My only mod has been to fit a temperature gauge. The Burco was already fitted with a Simmerstat (the white dial). It sets the % of power that the heating element works at. It seems to make it easier to...

Schoolboy error. (What do I do with Mad Boris)

Thanks both. Patience is a virtue! I’ll see what develops. Stupid thing is, that I spend ages designing labels for my bottles but didn’t put a simple sticker on my FV.

Schoolboy error. (What do I do with Mad Boris)

I’m still a newbie but have learnt a lot from the forum. I’ve brewed (BIAB) every Friday for the past six weeks. Last week was the “Mad Boris Russian Imperial Stout“ from the James Morton book. A bit of a beast with a nearly 9 kg grain bill. All went OK but struggled with the quantity of grain...

    Hello from Halesowen

Thanks buddy My next brew on Friday will be Mad Boris Russian Imperial Stout. I’m planning the Oldy Wordly for a few weeks afterwards. I think I‘ve got a spare packet of Empire, so I’ll try using that.

    Hello from Halesowen

I’ve recently got back into brewing after a long gap, having brewed a few beers from kits many years ago. I bought some second hand kit from a guy in Leeds (a Cygnet boiler with a simmerstat, a cooling coil, a couple of 20l stainless pots and a few other bits & pieces). He also threw in a FV...

Ballsed up ordering from Get Er Brewed - what will this make?

If it was me, I’d tip it all out on my kitchen table and separate it into 5 different piles with a teaspoon. It would only take about a day. 😉

    Plastic or Glass Bottles?

I’m a newbie and bottled my first brew yesterday in brown glass. Love the suggestion though of one bottle in plastic and one in clear glass. I’ve never seen that mentioned in any of the books I’ve read.
