    Heriot-Watt Brewing and Distilling course

Thank you, that’s very interesting. Word count is always a challenge - I spent ages rewording paragraphs to make points more succinctly, tried to make a point only once and, sometimes removed language altogether where the point I was making was only tangential to the assignment set. I also made...

    Heriot-Watt Brewing and Distilling course

@DocAnna some thoughts. What is the ”question” to which your essay is the “answer”? Does the feedback you are given show how your paper was marked and how your marks compares to the marking regime? I did an MSc in brewing science at University of Nottingham after a career in law so I tend to...

Sold 60 litre drums for malt storage

I have 3 x 60 litre plastic drums used but in clean condition for sale. These are great for storing 25Kg bags of malt. They are £20 each to be collected from Godalming. They are also advertised elsewhere so, unless you are quick they may have gone!

Counterflow chillers. How long do you leave it after the boil?

At the brewery where I work, we skim the foam off just before the boil starts. the copper empties from the bottom through slotted plates so the hops settle to form a filter bed which filters out most of the remaining hot-break. We have an in-line filter just upstream of a plate heat exchanger...

Burco power controller - can it be this simple?

@marshbrewer your may find this thread interesting: https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/build-yourself-a-cheap-digital-boiler-power-regulator.74112/ I built a phase angle controller based on @foxbat’s original post and it enables me to reduce power to my Burco during the boil to control...

    Bottle Conditioning Lager Question

If you put a sealed PET bottle full of air at atmospheric pressure (i.e, with no liquid in it) into a fridge at room temperature and take it down to 1C you will see exactly the same effect - the PET bottle will crush. The amount of pressure a given mass of gas will exert varies with temperature...

    Pressure fermenting

Please would you provide a reference for the paper reporting the White/Blichmann experiment? The data in your post show generally lower levels of esters in the beer fermented under pressure which might result in a more muted sensory impact.

    Base malts

I mill my own as it enables me to buy and store uncrushed malt in 25Kg sacks and (theorectically) to optimise the crush for my set up. The economics of milling your own change where homebrew shops make an appreciable charge for milling malt as happens, for example, in France. What I would like...

    Inkbird and tube heater

Depending on the ambient temperature outside the fridge and whether I am fermenting or cold crashing, I usually only connect either the fridge or the heater to reduce temperature volatility. Like @Clint and others, I attach the probe to the fermenter and cover with a piece of foam as it is the...

Thank you @Sadfield - what a helpful article.

    Anna's Brewdays

@DocAnna - interesting! It would also be interesting to try the effect at different fermentation temperatures for each yeast strain. The resulting beer could then be analysed for particular flavour compounds and/or by a tasting panel for its flavour profile.Possible basis for an MSc project?

    Why are my beers dark?

@the baron - it is a common misconception regarding CO2 that it “forms a blanket over the beer as it is heavier” that’s not how mixtures of gases behave. Gases in mixtures diffuse into one another to become homogenous - if you would like to learn more then Google “gas mixtures”. During...
