    Hello from New Zealand

Welcome mate! Makes a change for somebody wanting to travel from NZ to UK recently, each to their own I guess. 😉

Using recycled yeast with Brewfather - how to calculate pitch rate?

Quick update: I decided to pitch the whole lot and hope for the best. No nutrient was added (I only remembered that I had some in stock after the boil) but I did aerate the chilled wort liberally with pure oxygen between kettle and FV just before pitching the yeast, which I did by removing the...

Interested to hear how this turned out once it was fully conditioned ...

    Force carbonating

No worries. I'm in a similar situation myself, but the brand new fridge I recently bought is just a tad too small to fit three Cornelius kegs, so I'm going to look around for another one and use this one as a fermentation chamber / cold crasher. I wish that manufacturers would list accurate...

Using recycled yeast with Brewfather - how to calculate pitch rate?

Morning Gang! I've got what looks like 300 ml of yeast salvaged from my last brew, and want to try using this in a fresh brew, basically just to see if I can do it. Going forward I'm going to (over) build starters rather than pitching from sachets, but I'm waiting on equipment to arrive and...

    Force carbonating

There's going to be a learning curve which will depend your keg size and head space as well as your fridge temperature. If you're going down to 4 ℃ then 10 - 12 PSI for a week will give you around 2.4 vols (at least that's what my latest Brewfather batch recommended) but as others have said you...

    Stir plate

Not yet, but I'm still a beginner. Just wondering since I'm using a converted bathroom as brewery, and The Big Porcelain Telephone makes a rather handy trub-dump.

I wonder how many magnetic stir bars accidentally get flushed down the loo?

    Mini Kegs

I tend to use a plastic bottle fitted with a carbonation cap* to flush my lines with water, cleaner, water, and finally sanitiser. A second carbonation cap fitted to the other end of the line will make life easier here, but you can also use the pointy end of a spent CO2 cartridge to depress the...

    Stir plate

Good call. I've got a big bag of rare earth magnets and there should be something in there that'll do the job, but it's not something I'd have thought of initially. Stirrer, flasks, and stir bars have just been ordered - looking forward to making my first starter now.

    Stir plate

Are you happy with that HYCC stir plate @Galena? I'm taking your advice and looking to build my own starters, as usual there's a number of contrasting reviews on Amazon so a personal recommendation is worth something.

How long does Krausen stick around?

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies, and apologies for the slowness of mine - not getting forum notification emails these past couple of days. I'm planning to dry hop this brew today and in preparation for taking off the Fermzilla's collection jar I've been gradually reducing the...

How long does Krausen stick around?

Cheers Mr Baron! I'm happy to learn it's not an uncommon thing, but what should I do? Would you bottle / keg with that gunk on top (leaving it behind in the FV, natch) or should I wait until the yeast has cleared it up again? I'm thinking there may be some flavour impact as long as the brew has...

How long does Krausen stick around?

Actually, now that you mention it I also had some persistent Krausen with M44 a while ago. Table might be a good idea. I've got some pretty detailed notes for each of my brews and should be able to pull out that kind of data with a little effort. Going back to that brew you did with M44, did...

How long does Krausen stick around?

I'm used to seeing our foamy friend reaching its peak during vigorous fermentation and then gradually disappear, but on my latest brew, a hoppy session IPA, it's still visible even though fermentation slowed down drastically 5 days ago: Normally I'd have expected Krausen gone around 8 Apr...

    Calling those fermenting under pressure!

I'm using a Tilt Pro and tested it to 15 PSI for 24 hours prior to dropping it into an actual brew, no issues. I don't see why an iSpindel should be any different, but it's an easy thing to test without jeopardising an actual brew ...

    Fermenting under pressure

Good call, I like it. If your dip tube's adjustable you might want to start fermentation with it in the downward position, thereby reducing the chances of carp falling in. Unless you're using a floating dip tube (since you mention Krausen) in which case forget what I just said. 😁

Quickie: do I really need two packets of WLP001?

Mate, thanks for the detailed feedback, I really appreciate it. I'm sitting here with my morning coffee and haven't had time to fully take this in yet, though I've figured out that the pitch rate on the original recipe was set to the first option in the drop-down, 0.35, and that my batch recipe...

Quickie: do I really need two packets of WLP001?

Of course, but the malt pipe is part of the standard setup and would affect the volume, so do the markings take that into account? I'm guessing probably not since you can't see the bottom of the scale when the malt pipe is fitted, just the top half. I should probably go back and RTFM again -...

Quickie: do I really need two packets of WLP001?

I think I'm still trying to suss things out, forgive me if I'm labouring with seemingly unnecessary detail over things that have long been accepted. If I tell Brewfather that my HLT has 1 litre of dead space, it'll increase the sparge water step by one litre to accommodate. I get that. What I...
