Daft question: difference between types of LME?

Great find, thanks Rusty! I do love a good NEIPA and could listen to this bloke all day, which is something of a rarity for YouTube. Will put this one on the to-do list once I get my first extract brew out of the way.

My First Extract Brew: American Blonde?

Good to know. Out of curiosity, why steep any of the LME at all when you're just trying to extract hops goodness at this point? Wouldn't boiling water on its own for this purpose use less energy? I understand that it's easier to mix in the cold water at the end if the LME has an increased...

My First Extract Brew: American Blonde?

Thanks @MrRook and @Scottyburto - I'm gathering some useful knowledge here. To summarise the last couple of messages, is it fair to say that with regards to extract brewing: It's the hops which need hot water in order to give up their goodness, not the LME Therefore I only need to heat enough...

Recommend me a stainless FV to go with my all-in-one!

I'm looking to get into AG with the purchase of an all-in-one system, and I'd like to add an FV that connects straight to my system so that I can transfer the wort using the pump. I like the idea of eliminating plastic from my process and look forward to having some growth potential, like being...

My First Extract Brew: American Blonde?

Cheers for the feedback. I probably am over-thinking it a bit, but I also have a tendency to under-think so better err on the side of caution. With that ... When it comes to LME, isn't the °L / kg important too, or was that what you meant by volume? I did a bit of digging since I had no idea...

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

Can't say I'm not intrigued Clint, what's the craziest concoction you've animated to life with this wee beastie? To date, my only experience with yeast is a bumper pot of 'wine yeast' (yeah, no more info) from Love Brewing that I used on some cider, and some EC-1118 that we, er, also used on...

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

I've put together my first extract recipe in the builder and will start a new thread since I've drifted a little off-topic on this one. Many thanks once again to you and everyone else who contributed to bettering my understanding of different types of LME, and the revelation that I (almost) have...

My First Extract Brew: American Blonde?

Long story short: I ordered more 'light' LME than I needed, wondered if I could use it to pimp up any of my subsequent kit beers, discovered that it would make a fine base for an extract brew - something I've not attempted before. I headed over to the Recipe Builder™️ and put together this...

Bulldog Premium Evil Dog Double IPA

Evil Dog was one of the first kits I tried and ultimately has to shoulder some of the blame for getting me into this obsessive hobby. Didn't turn out too bad in the end, but if I did it again (and I am) then I'm going to wait until it's actually finished before adding the finishing hops. As...

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

Thanks again for all this. I'll have a fiddle with the recipe builder once I'm possession of all the right bits, though this won't be in time for the simple recipe mentioned earlier as I can't find that particular type of LME in the builder. Mind you, there's enough info on the bag so I should...

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

No worries, thanks again. I had a look at the calculator but it frankly gives me nightmares. So many choices! Quite surprised to find that the Crossmyloof hops I ordered are in there, but the Mangrove Jack's Light LME isn't. Oh well. Think I'll stick with the simple recipe that you posted...

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

But I'm OK to skip the bag and leave the hops in after boiling, right? I think an all-in-one system is where I'm heading next too, seriously eyeing up a B40 Pro and a nice shiny Uni-tank.

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

Gotcha, thanks. I just ordered some general ale yeast which claims to be good for US Pales among other things, hopefully that'll prove to be a stable all-rounder. I had considered some more specific strains like US-05 as I heard that's great with IPA, but it seems quite expensive on Amazon and...

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

That's ace, thanks @Banbeer! I'm tempted to give this a go ASAP but have a couple of questions: I don't have any beer yeast to hand right now, but there's some wine yeast left over from a cider experiment. Can I use that? Don't know any more about it I'm afraid - just "wine yeast". If not then...

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

Perfect! I tend to use 5 litre vessels (left-over Ashbeck bottles, if I'm honest) for experimentation. If you've got any recipes lying around I'd be most grateful, but don't go to any trouble on my account please!

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

I resemble that remark - you know how long I've been trying to ask daft questions?!? Seriously though, thanks for all the help so far. This is a nice place to be.

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

Oops - forgot you're probably in the same boat Gerry, apologies. Incidentally I had a fantastic time around the Wild Atlantic Way on my bike a couple of years back, never enjoyed myself so much despite being soaking wet for 4 days. Fantastic stuff. Bought my last car from Belfast too - any...

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

I think this is where I see somebody nudging away a rock to give me a glimpse of the rabbit-hole underneath. Do I understand correctly that I can just use those 1.2 kg bags of LME (and some other bits, like water, yeast, and flavouring) to brew something, a bit like I do right now with kits? I...

Daft question: difference between types of LME?

Cheers guys - @Banbeer is right, I am indeed brewing kits. Still undecided about making the jump to AG mainly due to the availability (read: shipping costs) of ingredients to where I live, which is also the reason I buy my kits in bulk ... and have ended up with all that 'light' LME. Will see...
