Making a DIY all in one brewing system?

These Polsinelli kettles are rather thin at 0.6mm so should be very workable in terms of tightening up a flange to seal a gasket. In comparison they're almost 1/2 the thickness of my Chinese stock pots at 1.1mm. You wouldn't want to drop one. The other thing to note is that the base is also...

Making a DIY all in one brewing system?

Angel HomeBrew also sell a very cheap version of the german Lauterhexe that BrewPi resell (comes in two sizes) which Angel HomeBrew call a Helix Coil. These are great as they fit any size pot. I use two and they work very well though you have to be careful in how you lay the coil out to make...

Making a DIY all in one brewing system?

To help you can work out how many watts you need for your brews using this calculation: Volume in liters * 4200 / power of element in watts = seconds per degree Celsius In terms of mounting your element/s, I suggest you have a look at these Weldless 1" BSP Mounting Kits. I used them on my...

    Pumps and PIDs

First of all, what an fantastic analysis @peebee , you're bang on the money wrt the challenges of placing the sensor which drives the HERMs PID. I've ended up with sensors at B,C & D so I can tweak the PID response per brew to reflect the slope across all 3 as it changes (as you correctly...

    NEIPA overthinking?

Yeah, I was shocked too. Watch the video, and the rest, he knows his stuff.

    NEIPA overthinking?

I've brewed a few NEIPA's and I've been pretty careful using a pressurized Brewzilla all-rounder with a hop-bong and end to end CO2 transfer and had good results so far, but after watching this video I don't think you can overthink your process or be too careful. For NEIPA's we're talking 50...

60 min vs 90 min boils

Genus Brewing recommend 3-5g per 5 gallon batch added to the mash. I've settle on 4g. Great guide here

What fermentation temp control swings are acceptable?

Yep, so performed a Ferulic rest at 45c during my step mash and held the temp at 18.5-19.0 for 2 days to maximise the 4VG production during the log phase and now pushing up the temp to gently bring out those banana esters and speed up the fermentation. Well thats the idea anyway. This is only my...

What fermentation temp control swings are acceptable?

I'm probably dragging the OP's thread off on a tangent but I'm in the middle of fermenting my Weizen and thought sharing these pictures may be interesting to some. This is part of the Brewblox dashboard view of my fermentation fridge. At the top you can see what's happening with the profile...

What fermentation temp control swings are acceptable?

Interesting, and there's a lot of good feedback in the comments. Like you say this is one data point and I think the xbt could have been a little better designed because both beers were pitched at 19c which is is in the center of the range for that yeast (Temperature Range: 60-72F, 15-22C), and...

What fermentation temp control swings are acceptable?

Fermentation is where the wort becomes beer, so I've taken a very different approach to most in building my home brewery from the start with temperature control in the fermentation process, for 3 reasons. 1.) Flavour. I'm brewing a Weizen atm, and I'm using Wyeast 3068 Weihenstephan Weizen...

    Nano/Pilot Brewery Build

I've been thinking about a similar path so will be following your adventure closely (thanks to the op for the Four Priests channel too). If you're looking to build your own controller, there's some pictures and details of the BrewPi/BrewBlox setup I've built further down in my 'newbie' thread...

Food-safe waterproof digital temp sensors (DS18B20)

Given your skills I understand perfectly. I tend to resort to making things myself when I can't get what I want or the price is just too high for what's involved. In this case, the Spark looks good value because I simply couldn't build it myself.

Food-safe waterproof digital temp sensors (DS18B20)

Building microbreweries sounds very appealing. acheers. Have you had a look at the Spark 4 as an ESP32 based platform? It's pretty slick, fully modular, allows a huge amount of customization and compared to a lot of systems I've seen, is very affordable. I'm running the slightly older Spark 3...

Food-safe waterproof digital temp sensors (DS18B20)

That looks pretty slick, and see you're using a PID to hit your target setpoint too. Nice work. Those ESP32 boards are pretty cheap too. Ever thought about packaging it up and marketing it?

Food-safe waterproof digital temp sensors (DS18B20)

I'm running the older Spark 3 from BrewPi with the rpi web interface, which controls my HERMS and Ferm temps via 1-Wire (scroll down to see the build). If you're aiming to do any temp control with those probes aand your rpi driver you might want to have a look at the SSR Expansion boards, at...

Food-safe waterproof digital temp sensors (DS18B20)

I have a couple of solutions for you. 1: 100% waterproof, food safe, silicon covered, epoxy filled DS18B20 probes from BrewPi (not cheap but excellent quality) 2: 60cm Stainless Thermowell tube - just sit in your beer and slide any DS18B20 probe into it without worry HTH.

    Another newbie

40l with loads of boil space as I was aiming for 19l brews, but the nice thing about using weldless fittings is that I can scale up simply by buying larger tuns and moving all the fittings across. Don't think I ever will now though.

Ok, here's the pics' I promised. This is the pile of kit that had been sitting in a container in NZ since 2018. SG law prohibit importing motorcycles older than 7 years so we left left a lot of stuff in NZ while we were there. Then we moved back to the UK mid covid in Oct 2020 and it took until...
