    February Dark beer competition

I've got a bottle of stout to send..... plus a Black IPA in the FV at the moment, all being well I will send one of those too. I'll contact you nearer the time for details once I'm ready to get something in the post 👍🍻

    Scottish National Homebrew Competition 2024

Interesting. I was looking at my feedback sheets earlier versus the BJCP guidelines - I spotted some inconsistencies between the guidelines and the comments from one of the judges. The other judge I'm happy enough with their comments and been making over how I could improve the beer based on...

    BJCP Competition Info 2024

For anyone that's had trouble registering for the LAB competition, they've updated the info on the website, added another fix, so I'm able to register now ☺️ (the organiser dropped me an email to let me know)

    Scottish National Homebrew Competition 2024

Well done @Deadhead @pilgrimhudd & @Hazelwood Brewery , good show 👍👏 My Czech Dark Lager scored 31/50 which is more or less consistent with how it scored in the December Freestyle Competition - I think I'm fairly happy with that considering it's my first national comp and I only entered at the...

    BJCP Competition Info 2024

Got a response late last night, they think it's actually a different problem but have assured me I'll be able to enter. While I'm waiting, I can't remember from the Scottish comp, or whether this one is similar - when you register do you have to decide pretty much what style(s) you're going to...

AHA! This might be a clue! (have emailed them)

    BJCP Competition Info 2024

Huh... I've tried registering on my computer and then my phone but both times I get 403 Error, Action Forbidden ☹️ Just checking, the page looks very similar to the Scottish National Homebrew Competition one, but it's completely different, right, so I *do* need to re-register?

    matt76's Brewdays

Really? Oh, I don't recall that, I'll have to have a hunt for that - thanks 👍😁 And there lies the problem with that book - it's a decent literature survey with a lot of useful information but the index isn't great (actually it's dreadful). A searchable electronic version would be super but I'm...

    matt76's Brewdays

Read it cover to cover when it came out 😉 I chatted to Scott a little bit on Twitter around that time, seems like a nice guy. His book is focusing more on Hazy IPA's which isn't quite what I'm going for, I'm more West coast, but it's still relevant. But despite all that, I've still generally...

    matt76's Brewdays

You most certainly may 😊 Yes they are. I think that's what distinguishes dip hopping from a hop tea. (exactly what dip hopping *is* , and how it's different to other practices, seems open to debate, e.g. some day you use hot water, others say hot wort) You can (and I have from time to time)...

AG#128 "Call of Fruity: Black Hops" Black IPA Edit: After posting this brew originally I had a blast of inspiration and changed the name A re-brew of AG#116 which was really good, inspired by Siren's excellent "In the Belly of a Shark" Black IPA. Rather than try to get it closer to Siren's...

January 2024 - American Pale Ales

No, no, not at all. I was just checking/confirming how much time I have to get my act together 🙃 (Besides which I think the rules say judging is meant to happen within 2 weeks of end of the month so not sure you can push it later anyway, not that I'm that much of a stickler 😉)

January 2024 - American Pale Ales

Is this still the planned judging date? As noted before, I have one APA already bottled and ready to send... The second one was kegged the other day so I'll be tapping it at the weekend, though I'll probably leave it until closer to the time to send both 🤞

    Klarstein

As noted above I don't use it any more (or very very rarely) - 1 less thing to clean! (2 actually if you include the sparge stand) Instead I just use 4 x fold back clips to clip the grain bag to the top of the kettle. I think the bag allows better free circulation than the solid metal walls of...

The London Pride / ESB partigyle rabbit hole

Thanks, yes, I had a feeling that the commercial scale vs. homebrew scale might well be a factor. Interesting presentation too, thanks for sharing 👍 OK - now I'm actually reading that as just the Target is 11.4% AAU. Reason being that I know from podcasts the Target goes in at 60mins for...

The London Pride / ESB partigyle rabbit hole

Thanks. From the podcasts where they interviewed the brewer they basically split the hops ⅔ & ⅓ between the stronger & weaker worts respectively - which fits with their own brewing log book, and what you're saying there.

The London Pride / ESB partigyle rabbit hole

Good question, but having listened to the various Brewing Network podcasts I'm pretty darn sure it's 60min. (In any case, there's not not a huge jump in bittering from 30 mins to 60mins, even less from 60 to 90)

The London Pride / ESB partigyle rabbit hole

Playing around in Brewer's Friend I think I can get it down to about 70g with a grain bill of 4.31kg, but that's down at the lower 25 IBU end of the scale for Best Bitter. That said I'm planning to partigyle a best and an ESB for which no brewing software is really geared up!

The London Pride / ESB partigyle rabbit hole

Hmm, OK, that's interesting. Like I say, I know I'm heavy handed with the hops. Out of interest, what were you brewing? And when you say "kettle hops" you mean throughout the boil right, not just the initial bittering addition?

The London Pride / ESB partigyle rabbit hole

Having slept on it and mulled it over a bit more I'm not sure I need to bother doing a semi-test run with my next brew, I think I'm more inclined to wing it on the day - I've done enough calculations and I'm comfortable enough I should be somewhere in the ballpark and end up with two worts I can...
