Interesting! I have an old pewter tankard in the cupboard that I haven't used in donkey's years; I've carried it around with me, but it's probably forty years since I've used it regularly! Maybe I should get the Autosol/Brasso out, give it a good clean and wash, and give it a try! :D

But just on efficiency, looking through my records now, last three oatmeal stouts I've brewed, efficiencies of 62%, 65%, and 63%, where by comparison, bitters are coming in with efficiencies of 70% to 74%. But I'm OK with that, as long as results are fairly consistent, which they are.

I'm not an S-04 hater, and I do use it some bitters, but I've found in stouts that US-05 or M42 work better. I suppose the circulation issues that some people have with oats I partially overcome with my low-tech 'bag-prodding' technique! :D

Don't really think oatmeal stout is any more difficult to brew than any other style, except to say that efficiency might be a little lower than other beers.

Great effort by Samoa to run the Kangaroos as close, I think, if not closer, than NZ or England would have managed. If only there was more international rugby league!

I've seen these complaints here about Hobgoblin bottles before. I can only say this: I have a lever type capper, and not only do Hobgoblin bottles work fine in my experience, I'd go further, and say that they are my favourite, seem to give a better seal! And I have never ever had a bottle...

In my ignorance, possibly, I thought it was largely the hop boil than does largely clear the wort, is that not the case? I don't really know how clear my wort is prior to hop boil, I've never thought to look, but I suspect not very. But as for the vorlauf thing, I do recycle a few litres of wort...

I won't offer any more of my dismal photography, but after a pint of Grey Sheep I'm now on to my Flakey Bitter, and I am really pleased with it. It's the only recipe I still use (apart from the parsnip stout) from my very early years decades ago, when I didn't really know what I was doing. But...

I've often thought the same about 'disposable' lighters. Even most of the cheap ones are refillable, so there's no excuse for not making them all so. Single-use items should be made illegal wherever possible, or, if that's not practical, taxed out of existence.
