What are you drinking tonight 2022?

I'm drinking Aldi Yorkshire Bitter. And a very nice pint it is too, I must say. Would buy again (although Aldi is on on the other side of town!). 🙂

What are you drinking tonight 2022?

I had something from them once, which I thought was equally vile!

    TETB’s Brewdays

As for 'adjusting the pH', I tend to bung a bit of citric acid into stouts, but nothing more sophisticated than that! I suppose I recirculate through the mash a bit for everything really, but I doubt our methods are really comparable. But as I said, I think consistence of results is most...

    Thoughts on pewter tankards

Interesting! I have an old pewter tankard in the cupboard that I haven't used in donkey's years; I've carried it around with me, but it's probably forty years since I've used it regularly! Maybe I should get the Autosol/Brasso out, give it a good clean and wash, and give it a try! :D

    TETB’s Brewdays

But just on efficiency, looking through my records now, last three oatmeal stouts I've brewed, efficiencies of 62%, 65%, and 63%, where by comparison, bitters are coming in with efficiencies of 70% to 74%. But I'm OK with that, as long as results are fairly consistent, which they are.

    TETB’s Brewdays

I'm not an S-04 hater, and I do use it some bitters, but I've found in stouts that US-05 or M42 work better. I suppose the circulation issues that some people have with oats I partially overcome with my low-tech 'bag-prodding' technique! :D

    What did you brew today?

Brewing a second, and bigger :D batch of Centennial Brown Ale.

    TETB’s Brewdays

I brew oatmeal stout quite often. I've used porridge oats, and also a mixture of porridge oats and naked oats. Both have worked fine, and I have never had any issues with clarity. All that usually happens is BHE drops a little; for me, typically, from around 70% to around 65%. I would prefer...

    What did you brew today?

Don't really think oatmeal stout is any more difficult to brew than any other style, except to say that efficiency might be a little lower than other beers.

Anyone watching the Rugby League World Cup?

Great effort by Samoa to run the Kangaroos as close, I think, if not closer, than NZ or England would have managed. If only there was more international rugby league!

What are you drinking tonight 2022?

Second taste of my Centennial Brown Ale. So pleased with this. Lovely dark amber colour, brilliantly clear, smells great, doesn't taste bad either! So sorry I only made a small batch, though. ☹️ So much so, that it made me check my notes: brewed on the 12/10, so I'm drinking it now a month and...

Anyone watching the Rugby League World Cup?

They will. A cracking match for the neutrals, as they say! Unfortunately England just didn't show the organisation they'd shown in previous matches, and you can't deny that Samoa were the better side on the day. I am only saddened by the lack of interest, across social media and beyond. Six...

What are you drinking tonight 2022?

First taste of my Centennial Brown Ale. Very young, only 16 days in the bottle, but it's been clear in the bottle almost as soon as I'd bottled it, so thought I'd give it a try. Gorgeous dark amber colour, smells great, crystal clear. Was aiming for highish carbonation, and this looks about...

    What did you brew today?

Another batch of Flakey Bitter from my hi-tech lab! Just ready for sparging there.

Commercial UK crown cap bottle recommendations

I've seen these complaints here about Hobgoblin bottles before. I can only say this: I have a lever type capper, and not only do Hobgoblin bottles work fine in my experience, I'd go further, and say that they are my favourite, seem to give a better seal! And I have never ever had a bottle...

    Clear wort when sparging?

In my ignorance, possibly, I thought it was largely the hop boil than does largely clear the wort, is that not the case? I don't really know how clear my wort is prior to hop boil, I've never thought to look, but I suspect not very. But as for the vorlauf thing, I do recycle a few litres of wort...

    Secret Santa 2022

I'm in for two too. Thanks, Alastair.

What are you drinking tonight 2022?

I won't offer any more of my dismal photography, but after a pint of Grey Sheep I'm now on to my Flakey Bitter, and I am really pleased with it. It's the only recipe I still use (apart from the parsnip stout) from my very early years decades ago, when I didn't really know what I was doing. But...

Second-most commonly used substance by 16–24-year-olds.

I've often thought the same about 'disposable' lighters. Even most of the cheap ones are refillable, so there's no excuse for not making them all so. Single-use items should be made illegal wherever possible, or, if that's not practical, taxed out of existence.
