Picture or Video of the day.

We had one when I was a kid. It blended in well with the tin bath and the open fire only lit in the evenings.

    Sterilizing

I use a splash of bleach in a couple of gallons of water after cleaning the fv after bottling. Then before re using it again I rinse it out well with cold water and finally rinse it out with a kettle full of boiling water. If that makes me a bleach queen, so be it. But it works

    What was your first car?

The Mrs had a little generic hatchback when we first met. A sunbeam I think. But first car I actually had after passing my driving test was a Peugeot 305 van bought new and ran til it was scrap. That was in the early 80s.

    New Fresh Ale category claimed

That would be very useful for the punter but would almost guarantee the end of cask ale. Why? Because the drinkers would stop buying while the pub is left with half a cask of unsellable beer. Not good business. They'd just switch to all keg

Tapeworm eggs in brain linked to undercooked bacon

I remember we were given pickled ascaris worms to dissect in biology class when I was at school and being told to be careful as the eggs were still viable. And today they don't even let kids use scissors in school...

    allinson yeast

Bear in mind that in parts of eastern and northern Europe the yeast of choice for some farmhouse ales is just bread yeast. Biggest problem with it is that it doesn't settle onto the bottom of the bottle and stick there like a good ale yeast so it's almost impossible to pour a beer without...

    White sugar addition to mash?

Just chuck it in the boil at the same time as the protofloc. It'll be dissolved before it hits the bottom. I often add a bit of sugar to my brews like this.

    Ideal workbench height

I don't think it matters but for your boiler or aio I'd have a bit high enough so you can drain into an fv but low enough so hoisting the grain bag out will be fairly easy.

    Flat earth official

I'm with that bloke Schroedinger with his cat - the earth is both spherical and flat at the same time. I know I don't take the curvature of the earth into account when I pop up to the village for some fish and chips But I hope the pilot does when I'm off on me holidays.

Picture or Video of the day.

I was very impressed with the camel knee curry I had in Tripoli in the cafe in the market.

    Chips and ......

    None, just salt and vinegar.

Spot on for both me and the Mrs too. What is this magic?

    Holidays

In Wales they're going to reduce the summer holidays to 4 weeks instead of 6. How the hell are they all meant to fit their holidays into just 4 weeks? Imagine you're a small business and all your employees have kids. You might as well just close down for the month.

Picture or Video of the day.

We've got one of them Chippy, it's really good though the riddle mechanism is absolutely useless. We only burn wood on ours so we never have to riddle it. Spares are pretty cheap and readily available.

    Minimun price.

Minimum price at the moment, 50p per unit means a 5 % bottle of beer in Tesco's would have to be at least 1.25. when it goes up to 65p it'll have to be 1.52. As they're all currently priced at 2.00, it's a story about nothing. Just more blah blah blah from both politicians and the media

    Minimun price.

The 50p rate in Wales had virtually no effect and in the meantime prices have risen so much that 65p will also have little or no effect.

    The big question.

I'd say yes. The seventies were a great time to live through. Oh sure I'd miss the ability to order absolutely anything online, but not much else. Apart from the beer...

    Guinness

I drink Guinness quite a lot. Usually because I'm fed up of buying pints of mediocre real ale. Why is it my own pale ales are so much better than pub versions? I find Guinness usually reliable smooth and easy drinking. Ok, it's not the best of the Irish stouts but no one round here stocks...
