Mash stuck due to a porridge-like sludge

I've been using a grainfather for 4 years and I've never backed the pump off as you call it, the pump should always operate unrestricted, the red valve is not a throttle to control pump flow, what it does is restrict and block flow and restricting will put extra stress on the product as its not...

Mash stuck due to a porridge-like sludge

At the start the pump will go faster than the flow of liquor through the grain bed, so as it builds up on the top plate it will go down the overflow to prevent the bottom running dry, as the mashing time progresses the flow will mostly go through the grain bed and the flow down the overflow will...

Mash stuck due to a porridge-like sludge

I brewed a Landlord clone on Saturday on a grainfather, I always use 16L for strike water and 16L for sparging, as due to the grain bill being less than 5kg using 2.5L per kg wouldn't reach and pass down the overflow pipe and would cause a stuck mash and allow the bottom to run dry and block...

    Yeast problems

The best idea is to take a gravity reading, thats the only way to judge if something is fermenting, airlock activity is not

    Who to purchase from?

I have the coat at home as I used to have to brew outside, its not really that essential inside if you wanted to save a few quid. I would recommend having a hop spider though which is in that start set, and you might want to think about how you're going to chill that fermenter as it will need a...

Chemsan - once diluted for use, how long can you keep using it?

I've left it weeks and its been fine sitting in a bucket, checked the Ph to ensure that it was still working before using it. As long as you're diluting correctly (2ml per Litre) and checking he Ph it going to be fine

    Who to purchase from?

You get a 3 year warranty on the Grainfather, on the odd occasions something goes wrong its good to have someone that you can rely on to get it resolved quickly. Most parts are replaceable and some stockists will carry all the parts so that you can expect a quick resolution to any problems.

    Washing oat husks before use

Use plenty of them on a regular basis, never washed them, never heard of any breweries that use them washing them either, never been advised by the manufacturer of them either that they need to be washed before use. If there is anything unwanted on there it will be killed off in the mash.

    GRASSY ?????

Grassy, a vegetal taste, fresh, green, like freshly mown grass. Can be associated to a number of reasons, over hopping, too long contact to hops, wrong blend of hops.

    Dry Hopping

You can dry hop either during or after fermentation, but usually this is done before packaging the beer, but its also not unheard of to add hops to packaged beer too. It all depends on your recipe and personal preference.

    First time posting

Hello, I see its customary to do a little intro and history of home brewing. So I'm Martin, always enjoyed drinking decent beer, a passion for more interesting things to drink, discovered American influenced beers and received a home brew kit (Woodfordes Wherry) as a present probably back in...
