    Batch sparge limits

Nice to have a compliment AM :thumb: To be honest I got the temperature way out from my trial run,so ended up with a mash with 2 litres more hot water (which I deducted from the top-up volume) than I was supposed to as I compensated for temperature.I'm beginning to think that I'll duplicate the...

    A bit of cake luv?

Thanks guys. To clarify...whilst emptying to secondary I took some of the primary sediment with some liquid and it's fermenting slowly under airlock in a demi-john.

    A bit of cake luv?

I have a bit of a dilemma - brewing a Belgian and moving to secondary which needs to sit on its trub and be cold conditioned at 4c for a month before bottling (which means the yeast will not survive?). I want to use the yeast for my next brew - am I better off in syphoning some yeast cake from...

    Batch sparge limits

What's the opinion out there if your batch sparging and near the end of the second run (with maximum water used) the brix is 7 - do you 1. leave alone as your target is met 2. go boil the kettle real quick and squeeze some more wort till it falls to 4 (sg 1.016)? :wha:

dave lines book brewing beers like those you buy

I'd be inclined to start off with a stiff mix at 45c then add small amounts of hotter water (as 80+c) until you reach your target, and repeat the process till you reach your final stage temperature - worth a thought :thumb: ;)

    aqarium heaters

To give you a good idea I've got an electrim emmersion heater which is 75 watts and that is geared up for standard 5 gallon brews - Moley's right about the set-up, though what I've done is instead of using my bucket I've gone for drilling a rubber bung and running the cable through this in my 4...

    First AG Brew

Thanks for all the supportive comments ....it's much appreciated! :thumb: I'm sure you've all been through the baptism of fire and scalded your hands (quite literally!) and are well familiar with the anticipation of the birth of a baby beer .....well she's got a lot of collic at the moment and...

    First AG Brew

Just done my first AG brew today (a Duvel style ale)- took 8 hours till all was cleaned and put away! I hope to improve on this next time as I had one or two hiccups, one concerning a shortfall of boil water as my grains absorbed more than the forum calculator gave and I also c**ked up with the...

Yeast recycling. Doing my bit for the environment

I don't know if I'm doing it all wrong but I've started to grow some yeast from a year old 500ml bottle of devil ale with only the inclusion of some pre-boiled sugar solution with common yeast nutrient. It seems to be doing ok and I'm going to build up to a litre over the next 2-3 days. Will this...

    Confessions

So, for the totally AG unitiated (and unconventional) would it be a viable approach to Mash for 90 minutes and boil for 70 minutes (doing a belgian ale) for a first go? I'm starting in the next 5 days!

    mixing it up

Interesting item Rabbie! Overnight my thoughts on a different yeast to use have changed as my Brewferm devil yeast clone has just reanimated ..."it's alive"! This is after a duvel yeast cloning failure on which I dumped this afterthought - but it seems to be working at the moment.Hopefully I'll...

    mixing it up

What would be the outcome if you fermented a beer as a Duvel clone with WB-06 yeast....would it be a minger, lacklustre or close to the mark...any thoughts? :hmm:
