    Define "Boil"

My boiler only has one element, so it's on or off, like a kettle. Hard rolling boil or dead calm.

    Define "Boil"

Practically, what difference would it make to a boil if it was cycling between 99C and 100C? I mean spending a lot of time not rolling in a boil but more simmering between 99 and 100C? If acceptable for quality, it would say a lot in electricity and a lot in "boil off".

    Define "Boil"

Lets say you have a thermostatically controlled wort boiler. If you leave the element at full it will be on all the time and water will never get to be more than boiling. It will never be above 100*C. No mater how powerful your boiler is. But, based on the latent heat capacity of water, any...

Lid on or lid off during/leading up to boil?

Well my first full volume boil was tense, but turned out to be benign. Just stirred it in as it formed. I don't recommend the whirlpooling thing, it get dangerous. Though I just realised I have been brewing condensed wort with partial mashes and a 12 litre pot.... until now. On the original...

Lid on or lid off during/leading up to boil?

Thanks, i need to get a water spray. I tried to repurpose a kitchen cleaner spray bottle, but I'll never get the smell out of it.

    Batch versus Boil size

Grrr. Not in fact a 40L boiler. It's 30 at best. Calibrated and labeled the sight glass using a 5L demijohn and then drained it into a youngs fermenter and it agreed to enough accuracy. Still it will do for 20L brews. It was also a good plan to dry run it with water as I have no hose that...

Lid on or lid off during/leading up to boil?

As a related question, what do you guys do about the hot break foam in the larger boilers? I know in a small stove top pan it can get a bit hairy, I tried whirlpooling it so the foam gets sucked down and boils off faster, but.... if you stop or slow the whirlpool it volcanoes and shoots...

    Quick question re BIAB

I make full volume tea in my mug, but if I take the bag out and put it into another cup of boiling water it will go someways to making a another brew too.

    Lager malt in an ale?

I've run out of Maris and want to do a brew tomorrow, is it okay to use British lager malt as a base malt? It's only a partial mash, and I only have 1Kg of lager malt.

    Batch versus Boil size

The boiler arrived. Of course the wort chiller hasn't. If it's not here tomorrow I'll go for a no chill brew. The boiler looks grand, most importantly it has a 110*C setting for rolling boil and states in the instructions to wait till the water boils and then turn it down to save power, so...

    CO2 Chargers

Assuming you have no leaks and are careful not to waste too much you should get about 8-10 brews per kilo of CO2. That includes cleaning the keg, purging the keg, carbonating and serving. While the 9 gram CO2 bulbs might be fine for serving from the keg, it's the cleaning, purging and getting...

    Batch versus Boil size

40 litre boiler ordered. Wort chiller ordered. I have ingredients for a partial mash so (delivery being prompt) I shall be able to do a full boil partial mash to test things out this weekend, before moving to all grain BIAB. Thanks for the help. I'll read up on full mashing etc. before I come...

    Quick question re BIAB

If I gather correctly, boiling the full amount including mash, sparge and boil off, you need a 40 litre boiler to do a 22 litre brew. I don't doubt some recipes ask for more and I haven't researched the intricacies of BIAB quite yet. However if you look at the question, what is the absolute...

    Batch versus Boil size

Or not at all. Been there. Binned it. Got a nice one for £17 which sticks to the side of the fridge via a magnet, it has an off button even though it will run for 5 years on a duracell :) Yes, I found my first outing with a proper thermometer and a BIAB was odd. I got my water to 72*C...

    Batch versus Boil size

So just to recomfirm if my plans are sane... If I get the 40 litre boiler I should be able to mash 4-5Kg of grain in the boiler in a bag. Remove the bag and sparge in a spare FV with a kettle and using the sparge runnings to get up to the 26 or so litres (I can calculate it later) for the...

    Batch versus Boil size

Thanks. I suppose it's like any hobby, certainly a lot of the ones I have got into. There are people trying to get started on a budget and incrementally and there are old hands who tell you that you ABSOLUTELY need this or that. But, you struggle through, sometimes you buy cheap stuff that...

    Batch versus Boil size

I did figure out a way to batch sparge with my current set up, simply use a spare 25 litre bucket. Dump the bag in to it and repeated add a kettle of water at 72*C let it stand for 5 minutes and pour back into the boiling pan while it's coming towards the boil. I can repeat this about 4 times...

    Batch versus Boil size

This happens everytime I try and take a step towards AG. I figure I can do it on a £100 budget, but then people start saying "A 30 litre boiler isn't enough", or, "You'll need to go to gas", "You don't want to do BIAB, so you'll need a tun and a sparge arm"..... So £100 quickly starts to...
