Carbonating beer with bicarbonate of soda

I'm still considering trying the force carbonation with an external yeast reaction idea. Maybe some day when I have the correct adapter I'll try and carbonate the corny with an external yeast fermentation and see what happens. I think I worked out once that a typical 23 litre brew generates a...

Carbonating beer with bicarbonate of soda

Just an aside point. This doesn't always work with plastic bottles. Plastic bottles have expansion pleats at the base and they expand with the pressure of carbonation. So the base is larger when carbonating and the sediment falls to pack in that space. When you open the bottle however the...

Carbonating beer with bicarbonate of soda

You could... Use a CO2 reactor and a carbonating cap on the bottles and lots and lots of tubing. I use one of these to generate CO2 for a fish tank (to help the plants with a carbon source). It amounts to a 2 litre bottle with water, yeast and sugar. It has a PVC pipe comnig out the top and...

    Amount of fermentables to add

I use "Nottingham Ale Yeast" from Dan Star, but while I notice a little difference it's not a major one. I've definately had more stalls with the Coopers yeast, but it still works. If you wanted to go for high ABV you can get yeasts particularly for that, or go for wine yeast (not sure what...

    Brewing beer with hops (beginner)

Ah thanks. I varied the process over the last year. I had ended up using 1.5Kg of Base malt + 0.5Kg of crystal, hence why I was mashing for an hour, not steeping. Think I started just steeping for 30 mins. Adding all the fermentables makes the condensed wort very thick and sticky and I...

    Amount of fermentables to add

The kit will tell you what ABV it will produce with and without the 1Kg of sugar. Usually 2.9% to 4.5-5%. Adding more fermentables will increase ABV. Adding sugar will increase ABV without balancing it with an increase in body that malt will. Once you get to beer over 7 or 8 percent...

    Brewing beer with hops (beginner)

For many, many brews I steeped 500g of crystal malt for an hour, then boiled that wort with hops, then added it to the kit with water and some sugar or malt extract. You can get some good variations of the theme and make the kit taste quite different.

Carbonating beer with bicarbonate of soda

Bicarbonates will react with the alpha acid, but as to what salt that would produce, god knows.

Carbonating beer with bicarbonate of soda

They are just sugar or malt pills making per bottle dosing easier, they still require carbonation time.

Carbonating beer with bicarbonate of soda

Sodium Bicarbonate and water... and other stuffs in beer. What you'll get is cabonic acid which will degrade to CO2 and water, with some sodium compounds left over. Really depends on what the sodium reacts with in the beer, but as sodium is not exactly benign it's not recommended. It IS often...

    Little Bottler Bubbles

Fill the siphon tube from a tap first. Then no sucking needed. Much more sterile than using your gob.

Celebration Ale-5 Marathons in 5 Days

While I love the idea... I would caution you regarding the HMRC. Apparently, regardless of whether it's for charity or not, you are selling alcohol and therefore need a license. They aren't stupid either, but you are more likely to get away with giving free beer, but providing a means for...

    Alcohol %

Cider kit + sugar is most likely going to turn out like "White Lightening", ie. cheap alco fuel that tastes like anti-freeze which was once introduced to an apple in the factory. Fine if that's what you want, but for a BBQ party, if your guests get stuck into it eagerly, I'd suggest barf pales.

    Extract number 2

Careful with the airing cupboard. What temp does it get to in there? I wouldn't even think about bottling conditioning for carbonation above about 25C. Presently I ferment at 18C, 16C sometimes with Danstar Nottingham Ale yeast and condition at "room temp", ie, 21-23C.

    Bottling for a newbie

Depends of course on the size of the bottles. A heaped teaspoon is about 6g of sugar. Fine for a "normal" beer bottle, but if you use 1 litre PET bottles, you need more like 10g. I like my beer fizzy and as I use plastic bottles that don't go bang, I normally add 200g of dextrose in the...

Hard lumps of spraymalt in my brew

This usually happens if the mix is too cold of if the spray malt cools the mix too low. It will dissolve in hotter water. Try adding boiling water until it melts. Alternatively try and crush the lumps against the side of the vessel with a spoon and stir them in.

    Cooling a Keg

Unless you have a supply of compressed gas you want to waste. Evaporating gas requires lots of heat..... Just thinking outside the box.
