Drilling a hole in bucket lid for an airlock grommet

Drilled the hole yesterday using the 12mm Bosch Professional Forstner bit using a benchtop pillar drill. The lid was clamped down and there was wood under the lid in the drilling area. The hole was far cleaner than I was initially expecting, looked as good as the pre drilled lids from Young's.

Young’s APA kit - coming out flat

I have previously purchased replacement pressure barrel seals from The Home Brew Shop and Balliihoo, but the latter is currently out of stock. Links: https://www.balliihoo.co.uk/valve-cap-seal-set-for-pressure-barrels-with-2-inch-caps...

Young’s APA kit - coming out flat

Is this from the Young's Microbrewery kit? If it is, I'd recommend swapping the 2 clear seals on the pressure barrel cap to the solid colour ones (brown on the outside, purple in the inside) as they seal far better.

Drilling a hole in bucket lid for an airlock grommet

I decided to purchase a new fermenting bucket last weekend but the lid didn't come with a hole pre-drilled for an airlock grommet. (This one - https://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/30-litre-fermenting-bin-with-litre-scale.html) What's the best way of drilling the hole? The yellow grommet I...

My experience of homebrew shops recently......

The main issue of getting to them from the M3 is having to deal with Bradfords Roundabout, it gets so busy because of Farnborough Gate, but it’s usually fine when going from the shop to the M3. I normally go via the A30 and Hawley Lane due to living around 10 miles from the shop. I have...

Is the Homebrew hobby in decline?

I’ve still got cider that I made in November 2022 in swing top bottles. They were still fine when I last had one a few months ago!

Is the Homebrew hobby in decline?

I started brewing back in 2016 as I got a brewing kit for my birthday (a Woodforde’s Wherry), and when searching for equipment discovered that there is a large homebrew shop nearby. My Dad did comment at the time that the kit was far better than the ones he made in the 70s/80s and did not have...

    Pressure Barrel Cap

I personally would have left the vent cap on the pressure barrel, as I discovered that there usually is enough gas produced through the secondary fermentation with the sugar to dispense the entire 40 pints. When I first used my Youngs Microbrewery set 8 years ago, I used the CO2 cap and...

    Quality bottling stick?

I found that my plastic bottling stick (from Wilko) did leak a bit when I attempted to use it with tubing, but works fine with a tap that's drilled into a bucket. I've not ever removed the bottom section where the valve is from my stick, only the top bit of plastic. I cannot say anything about...

    Pressure Barrel Question?

From my experience of my 2 Youngs pressure barrels, I found it was more likely that the S30 valve was leaking rather than the white cap washer, as the standard vent caps held the pressure fine. If you do have the S30 caps, I would recommend swapping the 2 clear seals with the solid colour seals...

    St Peter's Ruby kit

I brewed this kit back in 2016/17 and it only came with 1 yeast packet

    Bubbler Airlock

The ones I bought from Balliihoo a few months ago are noticeably bigger than the ones I bought from The Home Brew Shop. I just thought it was because of different manufacturers.

    Malt Miller now using DHL?

So I discovered in my area (thanks to Wilko) that Evri seem to be more reliable if you have the order delivered to the local parcelshop, but I cannot see that as an option on the Malt Miller website. Is that something that could be implemented?

    Flip Top Bottles

When I first started home brewing in 2016/2017, I purchased my swing top bottles from The Range (they used to be £10 for 12). Only issue I had with them was 1 box was missing a stopper so I had to hunt for some spares online. I haven’t had any issues with the seals yet either.

    Removing keg cap during carbonation

If it's a pressure barrel with a 2 inch cap, I would just use the vent cap myself then switch to the injection cap if required later on. If the gas is coming out of the injection pin, then the rubber seal on the underside of the cap needs re-seating or replacing.

MYO Lager Kit Advice (newbie to beer/lager making)

I know this is probably a bit late now, but the 2 cider kits I purchased from The Range a few months ago state that the manufacturer is Bevie Partners Ltd (Ritchies?). The MYO website also states Bevie. Wilko kits are made by Muntons.
