    Lagering in corny

Another dumb question about lagering in corny kegs. Is it necessary to keep the gas on the keg while lagering? Or just drop lager in, gas, purge, and then put the lid on and stick it in the freezer.

    Bottling/lagering

Great thanks for the advice. Will lager and then bottle. I have read that it is OK to add a different yeast strain at bottling to carbonate, such as nottingham. I dare say its not the perfectionist way to do it but if the result is acceptable....

    Bottling/lagering

My first pilsner (done with w34/70 yeast) is nearing the end of its fermentation and I am trying to decide what too do next. I'd like to put half in a corny and bottle the other half. The corny side of things is clear enough, I will rack from primary to corny (don't think I will bother with...

How do you bottle from a corni.

I beleive there are 2 methods. If you have cash to splash, thena Blichmann Beer Gun is te thing. Do a google search for it. There are some videos showing it in cation on YouTube also. I think Hop and Grape stock them. It's also possible to just use a long lenght of low diameter beer line at...

    Pilsner slow to start

Tastes good on crumpets, but not so good in a lager. Will try this diacetyl rest once it's reached FG.

    Pilsner slow to start

Well it's starting to drop now. 1035. What does diacetyl taste like?

    Pilsner slow to start

The Dulux Chutney Pilsner has not really got going yet. This is my first experiment with lager. I pitched 2 10g packs of w34/70 into 40l of wort at 22c, left 30 mins by which time there was a lot of activity on the surface, then aerated the bejesus out of it. After a gradual cool to 12c, it's...

    Dulux Chutney Pilsner AG#6

I have no idea how it escaped the tsunami of lilac paint. Sods Law would normally have dictated that it would have got the worst of it. Despite the chaos I had to have a laugh. I am looking forward to getting my brewery better organised to try and avoid such "mishaps" in future!

    Dulux Chutney Pilsner AG#6

Hehe. This homebrewing should be classed as an extreme sport. "Extreme Brewing" with a bucket of paint on your head and your gonads on fire. Yeah!!

    Dulux Chutney Pilsner AG#6

Yes - big thanks to Calum for the loan of the tun. If I'd attempted this with my old h&g one, this would have gone even more Pete Tong. I nearly considered giving up on the brew when I stood there covered from head to toe in paint, slightly dazed by what just happened!

    Dulux Chutney Pilsner AG#6

It was more like Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. This should probably be renamed Frank Spencer Pilsner :-)

    Dulux Chutney Pilsner AG#6

Where to start? Possibly the most disastrous days brewing ever. Moral of the story - poor preparation and a garage cluttered with kiddies toys makes for a stressful brew! I have today brewed a pilsner. Recipe here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2203317/pitrevie%20pilsner.pdf This was to be my first...

    Room in Mash Tun?

Oh that would make life so much easier!!! Can I pick it up this evening?

    Room in Mash Tun?

Thanks for that! - is there some rule of thumb for how much space the grain+water takes up? I will go for 20 litres then and try and get my 11kg bill of grain in. Suspect that wil be quite a stiff mash as I usually do 2.5l:1kg. I am very much looking forward to receiving my new 50l tun...! my...

    Room in Mash Tun?

I have been doing 5 gall brewlengths with my hop and grape "10 gallon brewery". Tomorrow I plan to try a 10gall recipe. They say the tun is capable of mashing 10kg of grain (I am going to try and get 11kg in). It is a 28l tun. Having weighed the grain out, it does fit in the tun with an inch...

    Degassing in the FV

Im wondering if it's OK to stabilise and degas my Wurzel while its still in the primary FV. I had always just assumed that it was best to rack it first then stabilise, degas fine. It would be much easier to just stabilise and degas in the Fv then leave to settle, rack, fine then filter/bottle.

    IDDs (Improvised Degassing Devices)

Great idea - I have one of these vacuvin things that is totally redundant as I cannot remember the last time a bottle of wine was not drunk in one sitting. I am going to knock one of these up. I guess it would do a 1 gall DJ fine but do you think it would have enough suction to degas a 5gall...

    Wurzel production increasing

Just Youngs GP Wine yeast. Nothing fancy. It's clearly enjoying itself in the FV!

Yes - it's gone off like a bomb!
