    where to buy ??

I've always used Malt Miller but noticed how expensive the hops were this time. I checked with Brew UK and saved £12 on hops plus free delivery at £65 not £100. Just hope the quality is OK??? Oh and his yeast seems to be cheaper, too.

    Hops in Yeast

Thanks for all those answers. I normally rinse my yeast but this was so full of hops, I couldn't be bothered. Obviously, I actually need to start containing my dry hops in something...

    Hops in Yeast

I recently brewed a very heavily dry hopped beer. I didn't collect the yeast as I dry hopped with loose leaves which were all through the trub. However, I collected the dregs from a couple of bottles to grow on. I've come to use it today and there is visible flecks of green in my yeast. Will...

    Alcohol free beer

That is the difficulty, the only way to keep ABV low is to put less malt in, so it's a challenge to find ways to maximise flavour other ways.

    Alcohol free beer

Tim, I'll look it out and send it on condition that you tweak it and let me know how it turns out. First taste, it obviously lacks a bit of flavour, then once you've had a few sips it starts to feel refreshing and pretty nice, but if you can find a way of adding a touch more body, that would be...

    Alcohol free beer

For the naysayers... I don’t like coke, tea, squash etc so by evening time I’ve had enough overstrength coffee and water. I don’t like to drink every day so a sub 1% brew is better than the alternatives. It’s also a great challenge to brew something that is enjoyable. At the moment, I’ve got...

    Making small beer.

Thanks, that's about what I was hoping for.

    Making small beer.

I think I went for brevity at the expense of clarity... I will mash the grain as normal, add the first sparge water and drain c 12 litres for the Golden Ale. Then I will add some crystal (or munich) and c12 litres to draw off a second batch to use as small beer.

    Making small beer.

I am going to brew 10 litres of golden ale and 10 litres of small beer from 2KG MO and 250g Vienna. Essentially I will follow the usual schedule for a 2 step batch sparge as if I was making a 20 litre brew, but the second batch sparge (i.e. half the brew length) will go to make the small beer. I...

    Extract or straight to AG?

My wife bought me an extract/partial mash set up for Christmas a couple of years ago because she didn't think I'd enjoy doing a kit. I messed around with a few extract brews (Greg Hughes book is great for giving extract versions of nearly all his recipes) which worked really well. I did a...

    Hi from Cumbria

Ah, well, if I'd known that, I'd have told you it was on the cut through from Ulverston to Barrow. That road was silent except for fifteen minutes in the morning and evening.

    Hi from Cumbria

Good perseverance! The landlord at the Burgoyne when I was there was John. He managed to look after his locals and still draw people from further afield for food. As I lived locally but was an 'off comer' I didn't count in either group!

    Hi from Cumbria

Close... in the bottom photo, take the left turn you can see, which will take you towards Urswick. After a couple of hundred yards, bear right rather than stick on the road that will take you to Little Urswick and Great Urswick. Almost immediately on your left you will see Travellers Rest...

    Hi from Cumbria

The Copper Dog was alive and kicking when I was there, not that I ever went in. We used to go to band night at The Rose and Crown. The Burgoyne used to be really good, too, but I think it's a Gastropub these days.

    Hi from Cumbria

There was, it was called The Traveller's Rest. If you look in the right light you can still faintly make out the name of the brewery on the back of the building, which is now two cottages, one of which is where I used to live.

    Hi from Cumbria

I lived for seven years in Skeldon Moor (back road from Urswick to Scales). Ulverston is my favourite town in England. I was married at Coronation Hall.

    Pressure Barrels?

Thanks, I've never got on with mine so I'll give those pointers a go.

    Have I done anything stupid?

Flameout and aroma steep hops certainly do add bitterness and a NEIPA shouldn't be very bitter. If you want juicy, hoppy, tropical then be careful of too many hops in the boil. I just did an IPA using tons of English hops with only a small amount at 20 and 10 mins and it was good.

    Educate me about Saison

Brew James Morton”s recipe. Probably my favourite beer.
