Five Star Saniclean for sanitising bottles

Another interesting link on this subject: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/star-sa ... hb-113446/ It sounds like I should be able to risk it!

Five Star Saniclean for sanitising bottles

Yeah, it would be nice to think so. Would still be interested to know whether anyone else had successfully used it this way though...

Five Star Saniclean for sanitising bottles

Just found this on an American brewing site - he'd heard someone from Five Star being interviewed: "Legally he has to say that Star San needs a contact time of 3 minutes, but 30 seconds is enough. Also legally he can't say that Saniclean is a sanitizer due to the huge costs of testing and...

Five Star Saniclean for sanitising bottles

As the main 'ingredient' in both is Phosphoric acid, why would the Saniclean need rinsing but the Starsan not?

Five Star Saniclean for sanitising bottles

I just wanted to check I'm not about to make a big mistake. I recently bought Five Star Saniclean assuming it was the same as Starsan, i.e. a no rinse sterilising/sanitising rinse that I could use as the final rinse on clean bottles just prior to bottling. It doesn't get a mention here...

Pitching onto a fresh yeast cake

In the end, I bottled it, as it were. Didn't want to risk the spicy, orange zest flavours of the stronger beer affecting the weaker best bitter. But great to see the useful links on approaches. I'll try it when I am doing things in a better order (i.e. weaker beer first) and see how it goes...

Pitching onto a fresh yeast cake

I'll attempt an answer, but others will know more/point out where I've got it wrong. Basically, I think you collect up plenty of the cake, put in a clean (sanitised?) glass jar with cooled boiled water, give it a good shake and let it settle out. As I understand it, you want the stuff that stays...

Pitching onto a fresh yeast cake

Thanks guys. Stronger beer already went in first - there's nothing I can do about that, I'm afraid. And most of you are making me pretty wary of trying this on this occasion. A further issue, there will be things like orange zest from the Christmas Beer mixed in the trub of the yeast cake. I...

Pitching onto a fresh yeast cake

Guys, I'm planning a brew day tomorrow, and will also be racking off a brew from the fermenter so thought it would be a good time to contemplate pitching onto the yeast cake. Anyone want to talk me out of it? One issue: the beer just completed fermenting is a 5.5% spicy Christmas ale, the beer...

    fermenting time

Not looking for shortcuts, just trying to see if there's any consensus :). I bottled straight from FV after only 8 days with my first couple of kit beers and beer was beautifully clean. My AG beers seem to take much longer to clear, and that's after conditioning for two weeks in secondary before...

    fermenting time

I'm interested in the 'standard approach' here too, if there is one. I've been going for about 10 days in primary FV, then put in secondary (pressure barrel for 10-14 days), then bottle. I wondered whether it would do much harm to speed things up by transferring to secondary to remove trub etc...

    Can flat bottles be rescued?

Well, I've gone for it, but not with all of them, as a sort of experiment. Just 8 bottles. Did it one bottle at a time. Spray malt dissolved in boiling water, cooled pan in bowl of cold water. Then lid off bottle, 5mls of sugar solution added using medicine syringe (sterilised), and new cap put...

    Can flat bottles be rescued?

Hmmm, I shall approach with caution, and see how we do :) Metal caps in my case so it's a bit all or nothing when I go for it.

    Can flat bottles be rescued?

Me too Mike. I may well give it a go, as an experiment, to see if they can indeed be rescued - but I'm wary of overdoing it with the sugar this time in an attempt to compensate.

    Can flat bottles be rescued?

Cheers. I'll certainly try that - although finding a warm enough place in my house is tricky at this time of year! I think I primed with way too little to be honest. I prime at the moment by mixing a small amount of the beer itself with some spray malt - probably about 4-5 spoonfuls for 30...

    Can flat bottles be rescued?

Sadly, my first attempt at AG brewing hasn't turned out as perfectly as I'd hoped. For various reasons, the beer is almost completely flat after 5 weeks in bottle. Various probable reasons: yeast was more attenuative than anticipated (75% or more), I didn't prime with enough sugar, and the...

I played safe and went with 90 mins in the end!

1st AG Brew - What did I do wrong?

To give an example Stewart, I've brewed today (a nice Golden Ale, with Challenger and Northdown hops, post boil with some Goldings), and the wort is cooling at the moment - down to about 30 degrees C so took a quick reading with hydrometer. Gravity is currently 1062, traget gravity is 1046. I'm...
