    What's the damage?

Thanks for the reply, dbg, I feel a bit less stressed now :) I didn't move the barrel too much so hopefully it'll be ok. Cheers for the advice Re: PTFE, hadn't thought of that before and will definitely try next time. I'll let you know how it turns out :thumb:

    What's the damage?

NoviceBrew strikes again! I've committed the schoolboy error of over-tightening my barrel and forcing the rubber seal so no pressure has built up. Fortunately today is only day 5 (moving from warm room to cold garage). I actually suspected I'd done it so I tested it by drawing some beer through...

    Out of date kits

Thanks very much for the tips, guys. I started the kit 2 nights ago with fresh yeast and bog standard brewing sugar and it's bubbling away ferociously! I'll let you know what the end result is like. Cheers!

    Out of date kits

Hi folks. What's the verdict on out of date beer kits? I've just discovered a Samson's Strong Ale kit in the garage and, delighted as I am, it's got AUG 2012 stamped on the bottom. Is it to be treated as a 'use by' date or can I apply 'best before' discression? Thanks in advance!

    Turbo cider question

Thanks for the advice chaps. I gave it a good shake and an extra few days. Good job too as it came back to life and there was still plenty of fermenting to be done. End result is positively mediocre. Sharp taste and not much fizz. I'll stick to 65p Aldi apple juice in future! Cheers

    Turbo cider question

Hi, I've been experimenting with turbo cider lately and, after some tasty (and frankly potent) results, I may have met my match. While trying to be clever, I bought Tesco 'Never From Concentrate' Apple, Peach and Pear juice Though it now seems obvious, it was a thick, smoothie-like consistency...

    Reducing the amount of water

Thanks for the advice guys, it seems to be brewing very nicely and consistently - reached the FV lid last night and has receded slightly today, 4 days in. How long would you recommend I leave it? I normally leave for 7/8 days if it's a full 23L. Another quick question - I really want to brew...

    Reducing the amount of water

Hi folks, I'm making a Coopers Stout which says make up to the full 23L but I seem to remember the last stout I made said to use a few litres less, so I've only made it up to 20L. I've browsed a couple of topics but can't find anything to say if there's any benefit to this. So I suppose my...

Wheat Beer question... (temp too hot?)

Hi folks, I've made a few successful brews since I last posted on here, but I have a question... I started a wheat beer kit 2 weeks ago today. It was a pretty hot day and my cold water wasn't too cold so the FV temp ended up being 28C and I presumed it was ruined from the start. It brewed out...

    Stout...disaster?

Thanks again for the advice, I'm pleased to report I have something resembling a half decent stout, I think! Hopefully someone can help me out with a few final bits though... The bottles have now had a week sat in a warm place, as per kit instructions, and the next step says 'move to a cool...

    Stout...disaster?

Thanks for the advice, and yes I'll let you know how it turns out. I did add about another 350g of sugar than the instructions said so I guess it will turn out a little stronger? The room I'm using has a nice steady 20-22C tepmerature so I'll go with your advice, leave it alone for 7-10 days and...

    Stout...disaster?

Hello, I'm attempting to brew my first stout and after following the advice of a supposedly experienced brewer I think I may have ruined it on day one. The advice was, to make a nice strong brew, culture some yeast (wine strength) separately in a pint glass with two spoons of sugar and when...
