First Brew - BiaB Tire Biter Bitter

drinking the first bottle of this as I type... not bad! Definitely made some mistakes, and there is a slight solventy smell, but it tastes pretty good apart from that, and will hopefully improve with a couple more weeks in the bottle. And brew #2 is already fermenting happily, a saison with...

adding water at differentpoints in the brew

thanks for the answer, but I don't want to get into a multiple brew process at this stage. Happy to make small-ish batches often rather than 23l ones, but would like something more than the 2.5 litres I ended up with first time round! Is there any problem topping up after mashing to replace...

adding water at differentpoints in the brew

Starting to realise I should have bought a bigger pan than 10 litres, but for now wondering how much beer I can still make in it (using brew in a bag). Is there any reason not to top up the water after mashing and removing the bag, before boiling? also, how much can you top the brew up in the...

    Hop substitution question for Saison

thanks for the advice, just realised they do stock it, but under H for Hallertau

    Hop substitution question for Saison

Planning on having a go at the Saison recipe in Randy Mosher's 'Radical Brewing'. The hop supplier I've been using doesn't have any Northern Brewer. As long as I take account of AA%, would it make sense to substitute East Kent Goldings? I've got some in the freezer, and I know they're used in...

    Nøgne Ø IPA clone

I'm going to have a go at this recipe for my second brew as soon as my first is ready to bottle (unless I give into temptation and buy a second fermenter before then!). A couple of questions, if anyone can help; - the version of this recipe under the 'recipes' section of this website has...

    Nøgne Ø IPA clone

bit of an old thread now, but if you're still here... how did this go? I notice on Nogne's homepage it says the India Pale Ale has chinook, cascade and simcoe hops http://www.nogne-o.com/constant-product ... e-ipa.html

    bubbling stopped after 24 hours

    bubbling stopped after 24 hours

it's at about 20 degrees, the yeast is S04 so comfortably within range. There's a couple of things I'm wondering if they could be the problem, although it's my first brew so could have done any number of things wrong... due to miscalculations I ended up with a very small batch of beer (2.5ish...

    bubbling stopped after 24 hours

my primary fermentation has stopped bubbling about 24 hours after it started. It has a nice inch or so of foam on top, and was bubbling away regularly until that point. Should I be worried? Palmer's 'how to brew' seems to suggest it should take at least 48 hours...

don't suppose you know if 'the calculator' works with Linux, do you?

First Brew - BiaB Tire Biter Bitter

can I still top my fermenter up with water, having already pitched the yeast? and if so, should I stir it in?

    hops in muslin bag?

another newbie question... should I use a hop bag when boiling hops, or is that just for dry hopping?

First Brew - BiaB Tire Biter Bitter

thanks. I wildly underestimated how much water would be lost to the malt, hops and evaporation. Was aiming for 5 and a half litres of beer so I just thought 'top it up a bit, I'll use 6 litres'. Can see now that was a bit silly... didn't measure gravity either, another mistake. Basically I...

First Brew - BiaB Tire Biter Bitter

well, it's in the fermenter and looks and smells good. I'm a bit shocked how much liquid I lost though. 6 litres of liquid has ended up with just over 2 litres of beer! Thought I'd read somewhere you should keep the lid off during the 90 mins boil, is that right? Still, it was fun, and...

First Brew - BiaB Tire Biter Bitter

grrr... today was supposed to be brewday, but due to the ineptness of UK Mail Group my malt, hops and yeast (which should have arrived yesterday) are still sitting in the shop...

First Brew - BiaB Tire Biter Bitter

This is my attempt to adapt the 'Tire Biter Bitter' recipe from Randy Mosher's 'Radical Brewing', scaling down for a 1.5 US Gallon Brew-in-a-Bag, and with Chinook instead of Northdown for the bittering hops. This will be my first ever brew, so if anyone would be up for having a look at the...

Brew in a Bag – A Step By Step Beginner’s Guide

going to try this method later this week, jumping straight in the deep end without having done kit brews first... a question - the guide doesn't say how long the 'mash' bit should be left for, just to check temperature every 15 mins. Think I've read an hour somewhere, is that about right? and...
