    Secondary FV beer explosion?

Thanks for your comments all. I really don't think the tap has leaked. The shelf above the barrel was covered with beer which leads me to believe pressure (and beer) was forced out of the valve in the screw top. Though it may have leaked through the tap also, I see no sign of this around the tap...

    Secondary FV beer explosion?

Thanks for the quick response. It was steady from the Friday - Sunday, which is when I racked it into the pressure barrel. Just as a visual aide, here is the headroom the barrel head when first racked and after the "explosion" (if that's the right term?) After racking: After explosion:

    Secondary FV beer explosion?

Hi all, I'm in the final straight (I hope) of my first brew. A kit IPA which had an OG of 1040 and a FG of 1008 when racked into a plastic pressure barrel (with tap). I added 80g of sugar dissolved to aide the secondary fermentation process and let it sit for a week at constant 18c indoors...

    My First Brew - questions

Thanks again for responses. It seems I may leave in the FV for another week. When I dropped hydrometer in today, the gravity was measuring between 1.008 - 1.006, so guess it's still doing its thing. I am surprised as I wouldn't expect this IPA kit (I've since realised it's brew maker not...

    My First Brew - questions

Thanks again for all your advice. I think I'm going to transfer to the serving barrel if fermentation has stopped by Sunday, then leave to condition until just before Christmas - so another 2 weeks from Sunday. Hopefully then it'll taste good, and by new year even better. One final question...

    My First Brew - questions

I once invented "beer bread" to soak up a spilled beer. Sadly it wasn't even a home brew :? And yes, I was rather inebriated at the time

    My First Brew - questions

Sorry for all the questions, but... Does this only apply to beer added to a bottle too soon? Does it not condition once it is in the bottle and sealed? If I did add it all to the serving barrel and decided later I wanted to bottle some, could I not add a burst of CO2 to it and bottle, or...

    My First Brew - questions

I hadn't heard of Green beer before. I assume that's when it hasn't cleared and settled properly? I'm not in so much of a rush to bottle. In fact, I'm happy to forgo bottling at all to get a nice barrel of beer for Christmas. I was more thinking of bottling to give away a few bottles to...

    My First Brew - questions

Thanks again for your comments. I am planning to serve this as a Christmas brew (in around 2 weeks or so), so really wanted to get it into the serving barrel as soon as is practical to do so. I'm happy for it then to condition in the serving barrel which is pressurised. What is the thinking...

    My First Brew - questions

Thanks for your input baggybill. The kit did indeed suggest fermentation would take just 5 days. However, being that I let it ferment quite a bit cooler than the suggested method, I thought it best to give it at least twice as long. What is the risk of bottling now, is it still to do with...

    My First Brew - questions

Thanks for your reply brewpirate. Are you suggesting waiting another 2 weeks before transferring to a barrel, or just the bottling? If just the bottling, is it okay to transfer all into the barrel and then transfer to the bottle from there in a couple of weeks? I don't have a number for the...

    My First Brew - questions

Hi Guys, I finally got a chance to start my first home-brew a couple of weeks ago. I used the Coopers IPA kit with 1KG of Sugar. I followed the kit instructions and pitched it at 24c and measured the gravity at 1040, however after reading on here I quickly realised that was too high and managed...

    Move over Fullers...

Awesome, thanks Noah. Will definitely add that to my list to try.

    Move over Fullers...

Joeyriles. Thanks for the advice, I'll look them up. I had read that Woodforde's Nog has been compared to Hobgoblin, have you ever brewed this? Brewed_Force, I was bought an entire Ballihoo brewing kit a couple of years ago and with it was the Brew Master IPA kit, which I thought was the best...

    Move over Fullers...

Hi All, Finally got around to starting my first brew this weekend, and thought I'd look around for additional advice, other than the fairly poor kit brew instructions. Pleased I came across this site as my first brew had just started fermenting at 25c and having read advice on here, managed to...
