    Stainless fermenters

I have three, I use them as casks rather than fermenters, they just, its a squeeze, fit in a 3 door bottle cooler I use as a mini cellar. In my opinion they do not match the brewtech brew bucket ss conical. Its in a different league. The Chinese made Klarstein are a thinner gauge, not as...

    My beers keep getting infected

jceg316 apologies I reread the thread, I missed your comment ref reusing yeast. I wouldn't, I used to. Just to save a couple of quid and be able to use fermenting yeast to pitch rather than dried. But I did get an infected brew (acetomonas). Tsk must have missed that when checking the yeast...

    My beers keep getting infected

If the FV is stainless I'd give it a thorough scald. (which is my routine, I don't use chemicals) If its plastic I'd replace. You mentioned brew started fermenting on its own - what was the time scale for this? I know people say you can cool overnight & pitch in the morning but personally I...

    Those bloody Grainfather silicone seals

what is the best beer you have ever tasted?

two spring to mind - first a Sam Smiths Bitter served from the wood at a pub in Whitby around about 1980 ish. We were staying in Goathland way before Heartbeat ruined it. & yes we did have several pints in the Goathland Hotel (Aidensfield Arms). Second was in early 1990's in Nottingham...

    Those bloody Grainfather silicone seals

OK so tried combination of Jakeyboi hot grain tube & Hoppy Tommys frozen seal technique with addition of my own tool to push evenly (bit of beer pipe in circle of diameter to fit snugly in grain tube). This worked swimmingly for bottom plate. Disappointing failure on top - wasn't going to use...

    Overflowing fermentation. Advice please.

FV temperature a factor, the warmer it is the faster and more vigorously it will ferment. Also can produce estery, fruity off flavours/aromas above 25C. For Wyeast ™ 1469 West Yorkshire Ale Yeast they recommend 21-24°C.

    Those bloody Grainfather silicone seals

Going to try combination of Jakeyboi hot grain tube & Hoppy Tommys frozen seal technique next brewday. Forget seal on top but continue to use the perforated disc itself mostly to stop excessive grain going into the overflow. I don't get the issue of compacted grain or at least I don't think I...

    Those bloody Grainfather silicone seals

yea, when I started they had just stopped using slate vessels the older chaps called swimming pools. I'd just say not all plastic is food safe and I have no idea what the plastic around garden wire is. The ss wire is definitely worth thinking about

    New to Forum

I wasn't a brewer. Worked in the laboratory, a lot of routine analysis, did look after pure yeast culture to sufficient quantity to pitch the production brew. Then out in trade getting landlords/bar managers/club stewards/ et al to look after beer properly. It was all along time ago, most of...

    Those bloody Grainfather silicone seals

I'd be a bit concerned using anything non food grade. After finishing today looked at not using seal at all but think it's a little too small, you have to centre it carefully and I dare say it will move when you add to mash liquor or grain so very chance of a Harbey event and I don't fancy...

    New to Forum

Hi, New to forum, not new to brewing. Have been brewing for 40 something years initially a few times with grain then turned to kits due to time constraints. Now retired have the time to go back to grain and treated myself to Grainfather a while back. The idea of recirculating plus the mash...

    Those bloody Grainfather silicone seals

Agreed those seal are a major design flaw. On my 50th gf brew today and yet another series of attempts to get both seals fitted and in place. I think the seals stretch with age and also the grain tube may go out of true, slightly oval rather than round. I normally ensure the grain tube has...
