    Durations of primary fermentations

Krausen dropped day 13/14 and I transferred it to a carboy earlier. Calculated 4.7%. seems ok, a slight fruity note but understand to expect that with US-05 yeast & think will add rather than take from the overall beer. So I *think* it's going to be ok! thank you all for chipping in with your...

    Whats everyone drinking?

Ploughing me way through a double oatmeal stout, love this stuff, going to make it again and add a little extra chocolate malt grain. I think I need to extend the love affair I'm having with this stuff. Stout seems to make me smile, amongst other things.

    Durations of primary fermentations

Thanks Hopping Mad, I left it well alone for several days. The krausen is now lower but still thick layer. I'm a bit paranoid it is infected, but will have to wait to find out. I did some other searches and found others at a different site having long fermentation with US05, which has made me...

    Durations of primary fermentations

Thanks Dan125, that's what I did with the first 2. I have peaked under the lid breifly a few times to make sure the krausen is not just foam stuck to the edges (and that it smells ok).

    Durations of primary fermentations

Thanks Fil, I haven't tested the gravity since I made it. Figured the krausen meant it was still busy. I will test it tomorrow and again in a few days time regardless, see how it's progressing. I used US-05 yeast. I don't have a brew fridge but the temperature has been very steady around...

    Durations of primary fermentations

I have a primary fermentation bucket for the initial fermentation, once the krausen drops I wait a day or so then transfer to carboy until gravity stable and the blooper goes quiet. This thing has been in full blast primary since Friday last week with 1" krausen. Maybe that's ok. I'm starting...

    Durations of primary fermentations

On 3rd brew, I'm surprised by the varying durations of primary fermentation. So far I have seen 36 hours, 4 days and now my latest is 8 days (and 5 hours) in and it still has a 1 inch foamy top. I am starting to wonder if somebody has made a large merangue and stuck it on top as a joke...

    Brewing too hot

when buying a one can kit here I was advised to use 1.3k of liquid malt extract rather than 1k of sugar. I don't actually know what "BREWING sugar" is. Liquid malt extract (LME) is more expensive than white sugar or corn sugar but I was advised it would result opinion a far better brew. Costs 8$...

    Not hoppy enough

Bottled 9 days ago, we tried this today, a bit young tasting but balanced, not a huge head, but hops worked in that it (surprisingly) does taste like Pilsner (yes I'm surprised as it was my first attempt), beginners luck - maybe partially through being judicious with hops quantity, but also...

    Hello!

That's how I feel, why on earth did I not think of this earlier. Lol.

    Hello!

Hi, sorry to hear about your dad. My dad also inspired me, but more as a result of stealing his stout when he wasn't looking. Im also new to brewing, on my 3rd beer & feeling the obsession rise.

    Late airlock action

If anybody else sees this, this is why. When hops are added at this stage at or near end of secondary fermentation need to allow another week or two for the beer to clear. Sometimes the beer will foam for a while. It is not fermenting. it's just acting as a 'nucleation' point for dissolved...

    Red Ale Recipe need review

Thinking if making a red ale using this recipe http://www.defalcowines.com/InstructionSheets/Lockhart%20Red%20Ale.pdf Will be the first non-kit I have attempted. I am a but surprised the grains come out so quick, but like the look of the recipe for a beginner. I'd appreciate any reviews...

    Late airlock action

3 days ago I added a few hop pellets to the end of the secondary fermentation of a Pilsner, at the time there was about 1 small bloop in the airlock every minute, and it had been in secondary fermentation for exactly 2 weeks. Now it's blooping rapidly as if it has returned to full...

    Not hoppy enough

Wikipedia have an excellent page on hops, stuff I never knew, better keep hops pellets away from the dog!

    Not hoppy enough

Darn! Ah well, we shall see, when we tasted it on Wednesday we both were pretty happy overall in that it did taste like beer (little wins), I differed saying more hops. I chucked in just a few last night and we will bottle tomorrow or Sunday. I was given the bottles, they need a serious...

    Not hoppy enough

Hi legion, they were northern brewer, I bought them specially for when I initially made it, the guy at the shop said they were good for Pilsner, we shall see :) thanks!

    Not hoppy enough

Thanks, there is an online store but it doesn't align to the shop (as I found) as it's stuff they can order in. They did have a whole fridge full of tons of hops varieties, I stood there agog for some time, they had all colours of LME. Lots of different grains in small medium and large bags. I...

    Not hoppy enough

Hi rodwha, I was curious if it was possible to make a beer with just LME and various hops. I have a local LBHS that sells most things, their LME are sold by the 1.3k, but they do have lots of small bags of grains, they are expensive though, friend did math and said it would cost more to do a...
