I don't know anything about this and haven't read the full article but I would not stay with a company that forces you to have a smart meter they are not very smart and have recently been proved to overcharge customers.

They can't force you, the RTS signal is longwave and used by the BBC, they are shutting radio 4 down, that same longwave powers the radio teleswitch service which tells 600,000 leccy metres when to switch to cheaper tariffs during the day and night, it is for those propertys that are not on the gas grid, if they want to keep their cheap tariffs they will have to get a smart meter

RTS systems are prevalent in homes and businesses that are off the gas network and rely on electricity for heating and hot water, according to The Telegraph. Despite the broadcaster's long-lasting desire to shut down the frequency, this specific radio signal has been maintained solely for the RTS meters and has been funded by the energy firms.

The down side of them having you by the billhooks.

Our economy7 timer used to be purely mechanical. No RTS.

So it meant that after every significant power cut I had to change the heating/immersion timers as the off peak time drifted.

At no point in the past did the meter reader ever change the timer or report it to get it changed.

But these days we have a smart meter for solar and heat pump tarif.
