Think you've solved it! I retrieved the saw from the garage earlier while checking up on my brews.
I took a picture of the chain on the bar then set about Google..
It appears that the last time I used it I had the chain and bar off to clean it ...and put the chain on the wrong way! The easiest way I found to realise this was to make sure the depth guide spike,shaped like a sharks fin,is "swimming" towards the blade tip...I later found an exact description with sharks on the diagrams!
So in the morning I will give it another go.
 
Had to double check...yes,wrong way round!
Well at least I know and thanks Rwilts and anyone else who may of mentioned it.
I also now know which replacement chain I might need and sharpener size.

Well...I say I know what chain and sharpener I would need but...
Research,generic chain comes up with 3/8" (pitch) 57 links for 40cm blade,low profile.Fine.
Sharpener...I like the Stihl but it comes in various sizes...including Picco,which is their low profile and standard 3/8 which both have quite different file sizes.

Still trying to work out the size as the "low profile" chains,which seem to be most of them are equivalent to Stihl Picco, their low profile chain. I emailed Stihl but they said they wouldn't advise coz my saw isn't one of theirs.

This might help. I use Oregon Type 91 - Blue dots which I expect is the picco chain your looking for.
