Asda Everyday tea bags came top of this recent Which? study. £1.20 for 80 bags. With a blind taste test. Why pay for advertising?!

Asda Everyday with a 72% score beat three others by one point.

The three joint-second place were PG Tips Original, Sainsbury’s Red Label, and Tetley Original, all scoring 71%. The tasters rated the taste, mouthfeel, aroma and appearance of each brew.

In the study conducted by Which? a panel of “experienced and committed tea drinkers” tasted 12 different teas. These were from big brands like PG Tips, Tetley, Twinings and Yorkshire Tea, alongside supermarket brands from the likes of Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

I've tried 8 out of that list and for my (and the rest of my family's) taste buds, Yorkshire comes out top every time. The likes of Tesco's, Sainsbury's, Tetley and the others are way off the mark. Personal taste, local water, brewing method and all that really do seem to make a difference. The next best brew has been Aldi Gold, not good enough as a replacement but at a push could stand in as a backup

I bought Yorkshire this week having fell out with them previously coz they dropped the box size to 210.
However while Mrs Clint picked up the Clipper tea I scrutinised the shelf label that gives the price per 100g and the Yorkshire was approx half price compared to the Clipper.

PG new blend 1%
Not that we sup PG Tips and this applies to other consumables too but why do they think that their improvements are what the customers want? I've read enough comments about several teas where people have complained about the new "improved" blend saying that they've ruined it and have lost a customer.
The above can also be said for beer too, once an accountant gets their nose into a head brewer's formulations the beer is usually doomed 🥴

I bought Yorkshire this week having fell out with them previously coz they dropped the box size to 210.

We usually buy as big a bag as we can and keep a good stock on so we can buy when they're on special offer

I huge backwards step why didn't they bring the new blend out alongside the original?


Lipton Teas and Infusions is giving PG Tips a completely new look and blend. The move comes as Lipton Teas and Infusions aims to put value back into the tea category through premiumising one of the leading brands. PG Tips’ new Original, Gold and Decaf SKUs will hit shelves across all retail channels in the UK in the coming weeks.


The re-launch is being supported with a planned multi-million-pound marketing campaign set to go live in the first half of 2024 – the biggest ever media spend in the tea category.

The company will support its retail partners in enhancing shelf navigation within the tea category. This will be achieved through the execution of in-store shopper activations, including front of store pallets, gondola end displays, and barkers. Out of store entrance communications, as well as disruptive online communications, are also planned.

Liam McNamara, PG Tips general manager, UK and Ireland, says: “Tea is much loved but has been one of the most neglected categories, so it’s crucial that we restore one of Britain’s most cherished beverages to create value for everyone. We will do this by delivering the highest quality product and experience to our consumers, coupled with efficient service for our retail partners.

“The re-launch aims to rekindle Britain’s profound affection for tea by enhancing the black tea drinking experience and delivering a more refreshing and superior taste across our portfolio. I'm presuming sales have at least dipped? He says that tea is one of Britain's most cherished beverages, if he really believes that then it should be left well alone in the blend that people know, love and can rely on. Oh and is this the same relaunch where the "scientifically proven to improve flavour" pyramid bags were replaced by a standard stretched square or is that another company?

Maybe they have been forced into changes by changes outside of their control. Loss of a supplier, climate change, upward price pressure or something. Things chamge over time.

That's all true but call it for what it is rather than trying to pull the wool over the consumers eyes

That's not how the marketing industry works, unfortunately is it?

Looks like the marketing industry failed big time with this one -

They have lost customers in droves look at Trustpilot below 519 reviews and 95% gave it one star.

As one reviewer said -
"You didn't advertise this New Blend except for a tiny logo on the box. I'm really sad I no longer look forward to a cup of tea from PG. Change it back please"

No taste. Awful news blend


Loved my cuppa for over 30 yrs. Now want a refund for 200 tea bags. I'm throwing them as the bags drop to the bottom of the cup and there's no real tea taste no matter how mong they infuse. If you want to retain customers Reinstate the pyramid bags and give us back proper original . You didn't advertise this New Blend except for a tiny logo on the box. I'm really sad I no longer look forward to a cup of tea from PG. Change it back please!!
