Yes, steel is remarkably comfortable (mine are carbon or alu, I love the zing of aluminium).

Thread resurrection time because I got a new bike 
Decided I needed something to keep up with my mountain biking mad son and thanks to the cycle to work scheme this suddenly seemed affordable when the repayments are spread over 12 months and taken out of my monthly pay packet pre tax
It's a Canyon Neuron CF 8, first carbon fibre bike I've ever owned too. Really pleased with it so far. Mountain bikes have come a long way since the last proper mountain bike I bought in 2000, a Marin Mount Vision with V brakes and maybe 80mm of suspension travel.
