Cider - brewing sugar or normal?

My apples tend to fall early because of codling moth and therefore they don’t have a huge amount of sugar. I am forced to add sugar to get above 1045. I’ve previously used brewing sugar but last year used normal. Some batches weren’t very nice but I’m not sure if it was because I used the normal sugar or just an unfortunate coincidence.

Similar question for carbonation.
