Not according to these figures -

A report in 2019 revealed that Queen Elizabeth II and her family cost the British people £67 million during the previous year.17 Dec 2020

A study by the Brand Finance Network estimated that in 2017 the monarchy generated a gross uplift of £1.766 bn to the UK economy.

What would happen to the British royal family if the monarchy were to be abolished? And how likely is that?

On present form in 2019, it seems highly unlikely that the British royal family will be sent packing. Queen Elizabeth II is immensely more liked than any political, TV or entertainment figure. In 2019, she topped YouGov’s list of Britain’s most admired women with 22.61 per cent of the poll – ahead of Michelle Obama (13 per cent), Judi Dench (7.66 per cent) and JK Rowling (6.77 per cent).

A study by the Brand Finance Network estimated that in 2017 the monarchy generated a gross uplift of £1.766bn to the UK economy. This was calculated by taking into consideration the Crown Estate’s surplus, plus the indirect effect of the monarchy on industries such as tourism, trade, media and arts – along with the benefits to British charities and the advertising value of extra coverage around the world for ‘Brand Britain’.

If, however, Britain’s royals were ever to be shown the door, it is fun to imagine an alternative existence in which we might discover some of them setting up lucrative dogs’ homes – with others, perhaps, finding jobs on reality television…

And who exactly are the Brand Finance Network? - if it's on the internet it isn't necessarily true

It was a pretty large event here, some beans spilled. I just found out that she's a movie star and not a simple Caucasian ( thought she looked Italian, maybe?). Full disclosure: the totality of my knowledge comes from watching a Stephen Colbert monologue about her and Prince (?) Harry.
There's no official royalty here but there's a lot of people wanting to know what movie stars are doing and the like. Is that what it's like having a Royal family?
By my questions, it should be apparent why I've never, and will probably never, participate in UK discussions of UK politics. I still don't get Brexit but I do like to watch a minute or two of Parliament (?) arguing topics--straightforward, loud, polite speeches.
Cheers!
I know you didn't mean it this way David but this isn't a soap opera/movie

The reality is that these overprivileged, unethical people are somehow part of our democracy, they change laws in secret ways to suit them. The queen recently sold the rights to offshore territory to energy companies so that they can build power plants there, she will benefit to the extent of £1bn plus per year

How come she "owns" these offshore properties and which mugs will be paying more for their energy whilst she pockets the money - the answer, of course, is we will

Whilst the royal family are no more than many other talentless "celebrities" they wield a lot more hidden power

The royals, in fact, brought in £430 million more than they cost us last year, leaving other royals such as the Spanish or Belgian ones lagging far behind.

This is the main finding of new research looking into royal expenditure, what they cost us and the UK’s financial benefits.

Overall, in 2018, the British royals contributed £595m via tourism, merchandise and the arts, while costing £165m.

This, apparently, makes them 18 times more profitable than Belgium’s royals, and an amazing 29 times more than the Spanish monarchy.

In the past five years, in fact, they have contributed £2.8 billion to the UK economy.

I did watch some of it but soon got bored when I realised it was not a real interview ( a interview is when the interviewer asks some searching questions some of which maybe unexpected to produce a spontaneous answer) but a orchestrated pre-scripted set of questions with video to suit so it was obviously rehearsed and edited to what they wanted it to be. There were no questions of the Markle side of the issue such as her father and why did hardly any relatives go to the wedding etc as that may spoil the one sided script they wanted to get across.
I also think it makes Oprah look as though she was not professional in this pre-scripted circus and took away from a serious searching interviewer that she once was also how can you have a personal friend conduct this as there is no balance in the information that comes out of it.
Having said that it really does not interest me because of the way it was conducted such as making accusations but not revealing the person I find it well thought out that the Royals would not want to respond to this. Who knows where the truth lies but if you are going to accuse lets give them the opportunity to reply

The comparison with other Royals is not the point

The Palace of Versailles in France brings in masses of tourists and income to France - do the French royalty still live there?

What place do the royal family people have in a democracy?

I asked earlier if you could give me an evidence that proves what i posted was wrong and instead of doing so you call my next example rubbish, again i ask if you have evidence to prove this wrong feel free to post it.

You have not provided any evidence just unsubstantiated views from people on the internet

You raised the question of their economic value

I am asking what role they have in a democracy?

And you have not provided any evidence any of the figures i have provided are false so there isn't much point in carrying this argument on feel free to prove these figures wrong and i will gladly delete the previous posts.

I have no interest in their role in a democracy.

I have no interest in their role in a democracy the alternative would fill me with dread.
I have no interest in proving you right or wrong - just that we should live in a fair democracy, where no one has secret privileges and wealth is evenly shared

Burden of proof is on the person presenting the data.

Well i wasn't expecting you to to be honest its easy to call something bollocks rather than take the time to prove it is.

Does that also go for the 1% below or is it just the royals you dislike?

Almost a quarter of all household wealth in the UK is held by the richest 1% of the population, according to alarming new research that reveals a historic underestimation of inequality in the country.

The study found that the top 1% had almost £800bn more wealth than suggested by official statistics, meaning that inequality has been far higher than previously thought. Researchers said the extra billions was a conservative estimate and could well be more.

The revelation comes amid calls for ministers to consider a new wealth tax or substantial reforms to existing levies on the rich, so that they play a bigger role in helping the country deal with the Covid fallout and the costs of an ageing population. Demands for a mansion tax are also being revived.

Around 5% of the total wealth held by the very richest households has been missed by official measures, researchers at the Resolution Foundation thinktank found. It discovered the missing wealth by comparing official statistics compiled by the Office for National Statistics with data from the Sunday Times Rich List.
